Media Reception: Issues and Practice

26th August to 4th September 2003
University of Westminster (London, UK)

Call For Papers

The 2003 Intensive European Programme for Doctoral Research in Communication brings together members of the European research community in order to debate contemporary issues in media, communication and cultural studies. The programme combines contributions from international experts and junior scholars, and takes the form of lectures, seminars, presentations, and workshops. Participating institutions include: the University of Barcelona, Brussels, Grenoble, Helsinki, Lund, Madrid, Stirling, Tampere and Westminster. The European Consortium for Communication Research (ECCR) will also participate in the 2003 programme in order to promote professional exchange and the research activities of doctoral students within ECCR.

This year, the theme of the 2003 Intensive European Programme for Doctoral Research in Communication is ŒMedia Reception: Issues and Practice¹.  The research community faces a challenge in understanding audiences/users in a rapidly changing, multi-media environment.   The topic of media reception includes a range of research in the reception of television, radio, film, video, print media and the internet, past and present.  Topics to be discussed include, but are not restricted to, the political economy of media reception, media production, media policy, media genres, media history, media and everyday life, and quantitative/qualitative media reception studies.

The co-ordinators of the 2003 Intensive European Programme for Doctoral Research in Communication are Dr Annette Hill, Reader in Communication, Communication and Media Research Institute, and Professor Vincent Porter, Research Centre Director, School of Media, Art and Design. Please contact Alison Sorrell (telephone: +44 (0)20 7911 5000, email: (sorrela /at/ wmin.ac.uk)) for further details, and for submission of abstracts. Research abstracts (150 words) should include details of research, intellectual framework, methods and potential findings, and be sent to Alison Sorrell by May 16 2003.

There is a special rate for members of ECCR. The cost of the programme is EURO 370 for the first five days of the event, or Euro 678 the full ten days of the event. Costs include accommodation and food and beverages for the duration of the programme.
