Cog in a Wheel? Radio and Sound in the Changing Mediascape

ECREA Radio and Sound Section Conference
8-10 September 2025

The ECREA Radio and Sound Section invites submissions for its 2025 conference, which will explore the evolving role of radio and sound in the contemporary media landscape. Over the years, radio has transitioned from a unidirectional broadcast medium to a dynamic and adaptive component of the media ecosystem. This transformation has been shaped by socio-political, economic, and technological developments, including the rise of artificial intelligence, the proliferation of non-human presenters, and ongoing challenges related to public trust and misinformation. Despite these changes, radio remains a crucial medium, particularly in times of crisis and conflict, serving as a communication tool for affected communities and diaspora groups.

Against this backdrop, the conference aims to conceptualise radio as a “cog in a changing wheel,” examining how its role has been defined, redefined, and contested across different historical, political, and geographical contexts. We welcome contributions that explore the resilience of radio, its adaptation to shifting media environments, and its various forms—including public, private, university, community, and political radio.

We encourage submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

1. Radio and Sound: Production, Formats, and Purposes
Production: Practices, ethnographies, podcasting, broadcast locations (prisons, hospitals, refugee camps, armed forces, etc.). Formats: Information, storytelling, drama, documentaries, talk shows, non-verbal sound codes. Purposes: Political communication, education, activism, entertainment, (dis)information.
2. Radio and Sound: Medium in Contexts
Medium: Civic, pirate, alternative, feminist, DIY, community, and not-for-profit radio. Contexts: Governance, regulation, freedom of speech, political and economic constraints.
3. Radio and Sound: Audiences and Listening
Audiences: Community, national, transnational, diasporic, demographic diversity. Listening: Cultural and philosophical dimensions, history of listening, listening as a political act.
4. Radio and Sound: Technologies
Infrastructure: DAB, streaming, hybrid radio, social media platforms, AI-driven content.
Artificial Intelligence: AI in radio production, trust, and disinformation.
5. Radio and Sound: Research
Theoretical Approaches: Political economy, gender studies, digital ethnography, archiving, oral history. Methodologies: Digital methods, network analysis, reception studies, journalism, sound art.
Interdisciplinary Perspectives
This conference seeks to foster dialogue between radio and sound studies and adjacent disciplines, including platform studies, internet studies, media history, political economy, digital media management, cultural studies, and social sciences.
