*DiGRA Brazil 2024
Game Studies in Brazil: challenges and possibilities
Fluminense Federal University (Niterói, Rio de Janeiro)
May 8-10, 2024*

*Call for Papers:*

Digital and analog games have consolidated themselves over the last three decades as one of Brazilian society’s most important vectors of entertainment and media experience. Its repercussions and influence across the social spectrum are unavoidable: from the relevance of its characters to the budget of its film and television adaptations, from the appropriation of its mechanics as a way of boosting the world of work to the rise of professional players to star status, it is not possible to understand the contemporary media and social landscape without conceiving the protagonism that games have. In their intersections with Brazilian culture, games found a place to flourish.

It is only natural, therefore, that the Digra Brasil conference – the national arm of the Digital Games Research Association – in its 2024 edition, seeks to take a careful look at the local understanding of our scenario and cultural constitution. Game studies is a historically organized field in the USA and Europe, especially Scandinavia. Although in Brazil, academic research into digital games had its first expressions in the first decade of the 21st century, in areas such as pedagogy, psychology, and communication, only recently were we able to witness the growth of themes and objects of investigation that directly dialogue with issues and contexts specific to the Brazilian reality.

This awakening is necessary to understand the relationship between games and players in Brazil’s social, cultural, political, and economic aspects. In other words, it is urgent and imperative to create and disseminate knowledge and epistemologies that take these contexts into account, encouraging original research that dialogues with the Brazilian reality.

In this spirit, we invite researchers to submit abstracts within the following thematic axes, but not limited to them:

• Digital games and Brazilian reality
• Games, politics, and power
• Relationships between play and work
• Games, consumption, and consumers
• Digital games and decoloniality
• Digital games in their transmedia relationship
• Digital games and spectatorship
• Digital games and aesthetic experience
• Playful appropriation
• Digital games and sociability
• Streaming and streamers
• Archaeology of games
• History of video games in Brazil
• Digital and analog Role-Playing Games
• Boardgames
