Rethinking Latin America: New Journeys Across Film and Literature
Friday 26 April, 2024
University of Warwick - Coventry, United Kingdom

[DEADLINE REMINDER]
Please send your abstract by 16 February, 2024

Call for Papers:

In recent years, Latin America has undergone profound societal transformations shaped by political upheavals across the region, from political crises in Peru, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, to protests in Panama, Ecuador, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina. One productive way to better understand these rapid changes is through the emergence of new narratives in film and literature, touching on themes of government and police corruption, corporate irresponsibility, and economic inequality. The stories conveyed in movies and books serve as important reflections of the complex interplay between politics, identity, and society, which has shaped the region’s unique identity, exploring how challenges have changed over time.

This conference aims to explore these artistic narratives as a means to better comprehend Latin America’s rapidly evolving landscapes. We welcome contributions from researchers and scholars eager to discuss and debate on interdisciplinary perspectives on how film, literature, and other narrative media are grappling with the modern shaping of Latin American identities and societies.

Topics for abstract submission include, but are not limited to:

Representation and identity in Latin American cinema and/or literature.
Transnational narratives and globalisation in Latin American media.
Intersections of culture, politics, and society in Latin American film and/or literature. Comparative analyses of Latin American and other cinematic or literary traditions.
Digital media and its impact on Latin American cultural production.
Indigenous voices and narratives in Latin American cinema and/or literature.
Gender, sexuality, and diversity in Latin American media.
Historical perspectives on Latin American cinematic and literary movements.
The role of Latin American literature and/or film in shaping cultural memory.

Please submit abstracts of no more than 250 words plus presentation title, author(s) name(s), and affiliation to Vladimir Rosas-Salazar: (vladimir.i.rosas-salazar /at/ warwick.ac.uk) by 16 February 2024.
