GODS OF WINE
11th International Conference on Textual Analysis Trama y Fondo

Everything that is relevant to a civilization is to be found in its rites and myths, the manifestations of which are associated with their gods. That is the case, since ancient times, with wine, a major beverage of Mediterranean cultures. From the Egyptian Osiris to the Christian Jesus, including the Greek Dionysus and the Roman Bacchus, wine has been present in these cultures’ major rituals, as well as at the core of their extremely significant mythological stories.

Then, the civilization born in that environment, but already expanded to a much larger geographical area that we have called the West, took the risky step of challenging its own mythology –the effects of which have not yet been sufficiently pondered. And yet wine continued finding a no less remarkable place in the artistic texts that came to occupy the place vacated by mythology, thus remaining associated, if not with the vanished gods, with the heroes who have replaced them in these new stories.

As it is worth reflecting on the foregoing, the Trama y Fondo Cultural Association and the University of La Rioja convene the 11th International Conference on Textual Analysis that will be held in Logroño, Spain, during the 8th, 9th and 10th of October 2020, under the title Gods of Wine. On the 10th of October the conference will be held at the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla, birthplace of the Spanish language and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As wine is primus inter pares in the vast territory of alcoholic drinks, all of them: beer, whisky, tequila, pisco, rum, chicha, brandy, gin, vodka, sake, etc. and the texts in which they have a relevant presence, can find a place in our eleventh conference. The call for papers is now open.
