Wed Feb 27 23:17:14 GMT 2019
*Call for Papers***
*/Odd Man Out /(Carol Reed, 1947): **Film*, *History, **Politics *
*a symposium hosted by Huston School of Film & Digital Media, NUI Galway*
* Saturday 25 May 2019**
Papers are invited for a one-day symposium on Carol Reed’s 1947 film
starring James Mason as a wounded IRA man on the run, scuttling through
the dark streets of Belfast in a bid to evade capture by the British
authorities.
The symposium (and screening of the film) is organised by Breandán/Mac
Suibhne/(/The End of Outrage: Post-Famine Adjustment in Rural Ireland/,
Oxford 2018) and Tony Tracy (Huston School of Film & Digital Media, NUI
Galway)and seeks to develop upon existing scholarship across a variety
of themes and approaches. To date we have a number of eminent speakers
confirmed but are keen to promote as multidimensional approach as possible.
Among the themes we would wish to consider are:
Odd Man Out as adaptation; its status as an Anglo-Irish
literary/cinematic narrative from historical, gendered and political
perspectives; its imagining of [Northern-Irish] space; its place within
the post-war oeuvre of director Reed; its contemporary reception and
ongoing legacy.
It is envisaged that proceedings will be published in a Journal special
issue
Please forward proposals (Up to 250 words) before *April 1st* to:
(tony.tracy /at/ nuigalway.ie) <mailto:(tony.tracy /at/ nuigalway.ie)>
* The symposium is planned as an ancillary event to the "Violence, Space
and Archives" conference at NUI Galway and is *free of charge*
