A Call for Papers: The 8th Annual Korean Screen Cultures Conference 
(KSCC 2019)

Hosted by the University of Central Lancashire, Preston, UK
KCSS dates: Thursday 6th June to Friday 7th June 2019 (Check-in and film 
screening from 5 pm Wednesday June 5th)
Pre-conference K-Drama Symposium: Wednesday 5th June 2019 (check-in and 
drama-screening Tuesday 4th June from 5 pm)
Key Details: Two-three nights accommodation, meals and refreshments 
provided, limited support for postgrad transport expenses, optional Lake 
District day trip (small extra charge).

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Preston, UK, is delighted 
to host the 8th Korean Screen Cultures Conference supported by the Korea 
Foundation. This follows successful conferences at SOAS, Sheffield 
Hallam University, the University of Copenhagen, King’s College, London, 
Universität Hamburg, and the University of Helsinki. UCLan is also 
hosting a one-day pre-conference symposium on South Korean dramas and 
other television shows. You all invited to join us on a day trip to 
sample the scenic delights of the UK’s famous Lake District (Saturday 
8th June).  KSCC 2019 Themes: Interdisciplinarity and ‘Trans-Korean Studies’
The KSCC is a unique forum for the exchange of new perspectives on 
Korean screen cultures that has helped forge a diverse and international 
community of Korean Screen Cultures scholars. The 2019 KSCC builds on 
this diversity through this year’s twin conference themes of 
Interdisciplinarity and ‘Trans-Korean Studies’. We invite 
interdisciplinary panels, and also contributions for a ‘Screen Media 
Pedagogies swap shop’ and a collaborative research forum. To celebrate 
the launch of UCLan’s new master’s programme on North Korean Studies, we 
particularly invite papers on North Korean cinema and television. 
Moreover, we encourage an integrative approach to Korean screen cultures 
that explores the cultural and socio-political interrelations between 
North, South and Diasporic Korean screen media.
KSCC Call for Papers:
We welcome proposals for papers and panels on this year’s themes of 
Interdisciplinary/Trans-Korean Studies and on all aspects of Korean 
screen cultures, including but not limited to:
•	‘Trans-Korean’ approaches to Korean screen media and cultures
•	South / North / Diasporic Korean Cinemas (all periods): texts, 
production, circulation, reception
•	Korean video games, Webtunes, Korean media arts
•	K-Pop music video form, narratives, circulation, etc.
•	Youtube video made by North/South/Disaporic Koreans
•	Mobile screen media, esp. Live-streaming media platforms, such as 
Afreeka TV
•	Korean adverts and public screens (on the subway, in the streets, in 
waiting rooms, etc)
•	Indy cinema texts, production, exhibition and questions of censorship
•	Documentary texts, production, exhibition and questions of censorship
•	The impact of the Park Geun-hye era blacklists and other interventions 
on the production and exhibition of screen media in South Korea
•	Korean film festivals, including the Pyongyang Film Festival
•	The transnational and intermedial aesthetics of Korean screen culture 
•	Transnational/intermedial adaptations, co-productions, collaborations, 
etc.
•	Film as history, including questions of witnessing and historiography 
•	Pedagogies swapshop: o	Papers on using  Korean screen media to engage 
students and foster critical discussion of Korean cultures. o	Short 
presentations that demonstrate current teaching practice •	Papers on 
other forms and interpretations of Korean screen culture will also be 
considered.
•	We particularly encourage proposals from independent, early career and 
postgrad researchers.

Application Deadlines and Formats
•	Proposals  by 21st February 2019, acceptance notifications by 15th 
March, full papers of 5,500-6,000 words by 15th May 2019. •	Individual 
papers: Name, institutional affiliation, paper title, an abstract of 300 
words, and a 50-100 word presenter biography.  •	Panels: Submit all 
individual papers/bios in one long document, headed with a 300-word 
panel abstract and the name of the chair. •	Email to as WORD (no PDFs

K-Drama and K-TV pre-conference symposium Call for Papers:
Dates: Wednesday 5th June 2019 (check-in and drama-screening Tuesday 4th 
June from 5 pm)

The K-Drama symposium is a separate, one-day ‘pre-conference’ linked to 
KSCC. It aims to produce an edited collection on Korean TV drama and 
other TV formats. Over recent years the circulation of Korean television 
media has expanded considerably, via platforms such as Netflix, Amazon 
Prime, and Viki. Global interest in Korea TV media also expands beyond 
diversifying genres of TV-drama to encompass other TV format, such as 
reality TV and chat shows. Such changes raise a multitude of questions 
that this symposium aims to address. We invite papers on all research 
related to the global consumption of Korean TV , especially: •	K-drama 
production practices
•	Genre forms and thematic concerns in K-drama and other TV formats
•	Questions of reception and appropriation of K-TV on global content 
platforms
•	Platform distribution markets and practices
•	‘Netflix original’ K-Drama/film

Attending both KSCC and the Pre-KSCC Symposium?
Presenters may submit papers for the K-drama symposium and attend for 
one day, or may submit papers for both KSCC and K-Drama (i.e. two 
papers) and attend both events. KSCC presenters who do not present at 
the K-Drama symposium are welcome to come early to attend the symposium. 
Their accommodation will be provided for Wednesday 5th June, but we 
cannot guarantee to cover accommodation for Tuesday 4th June unless you 
are presenting at both events.
