[Commlist] Call for Abstracts: AI in Australian Literature

We invite submissions for /AI in Australian Literature/, an 
interdisciplinary edited collection exploring how artificial 
intelligence is represented in Australian literary works, and what these 
representations reveal about Australian identities, cultures, and 
sociotechnical imaginaries. This edited collection will be proposed for 
publication with UNSW Press <https://unsw.press/>.

Despite the growing global discourse around AI, uniquely Australian 
perspectives remain underrepresented. Yet Australian literature has 
engaged with AI for over a century, offering rich, nuanced insights into 
our hopes, fears, and assumptions about emerging technologies. This 
collection seeks to bring those insights into contemporary conversations 
about AI policy, ethics, and regulation.

Each contributor will analyse one work of Australian literature - this 
could be a novel, play, poem, or any other type of literary work. We 
define ‘Australian literature’ as any work in accordance with the

Each chapter will explore how AI is portrayed in the contributor’s 
selected work of Australian literature, with analytical focus on what 
that portrayal suggests about Australian identities and cultures. 
Contributors will be encouraged to engage with current conversations, 
news, and policies about AI in Australia.

Contributions are welcome from scholars, practitioners, and industry 
professionals across disciplines. Although this is an academic volume, 
chapters should be comprehensible and enjoyable to the enthusiastic lay 
reader. *Chapters should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words, all-inclusive.

*Our proposal will be sent to UNSW Press by the end of September. UNSW 
indicates a review time of up to three months. If the proposal to UNSW 
is accepted,* chapters will be due within six months of the proposal's 
acceptance date. *No payment from the authors will be required at any time.

For this volume, we apply an intentionally broad definition of 
‘artificial intelligence’: the machinic simulation of human intelligence.

*Please submit an abstract of no more than 200 words, all inclusive, and 
a bio of no more than 100 words (per author) by 7 September 2026, end of 
day, anywhere on earth. *Abstracts will be reviewed the week of their 
being due, with authors being notified of review results by Friday, 11 
September 2026.*
