Over the past decades, digital technologies - first online platforms and
increasingly generative artificial intelligence (GAI) - have profoundly
reshaped the architecture of contemporary news and information systems.
The growing integration of generative AI into media production,
distribution, and consumption is accelerating long-standing
transformations driven by technology companies, their business models,
and operational practices. These developments have contributed to
increasingly personalised yet fragmented information environments,
blurring the boundaries between professional and amateur actors,
producers and users, and between authentic, synthetic, and manipulated
content.
While generative AI presents new opportunities for more efficient,
creative, and potentially more inclusive forms of journalism and public
communication, it also raises significant concerns for the integrity of
the information sphere as a foundation of democratic life. The
widespread deployment of generative systems intensifies challenges
related to epistemic authority, credibility, transparency, and
accountability, while further reshaping power relations within media
ecosystems and political communication, and endangering the economic
sustainability of journalism.
This special issue of the */Media Studies journal /*invites
cross-disciplinary contributions that critically examine the structural
implications of generative AI for news media, political communication,
and journalism education. We particularly welcome theoretical,
empirical, and methodological work that situates generative AI within
broader political, economic, regulatory, and educational contexts, and
that assesses both its democratic potential and its risks. The special
issue follows the 17th Dubrovnik Media Days conference, and welcomes
(but is not limited to) expanded and revised conference papers.
