V MeLCi Lab Autumn School – AI Research Practice and Media and Communication: Science bootcamp to improve research hands-on skills

Dates: 11th-14th November 2025
Location: Online | Organised by CICANT – MeLCi and AISIC Labs | Lusófona University, Portugal

The Media Literacy and Civic Cultures Lab—MeLCi Lab (Lusófona University, CICANT)—is organising its 5th Autumn School from 11 to 14 November 2025. The event will take place online and is designed as a boot camp to enhance hands-on research skills.

The program invites applications from PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and early-career scholars. Over four days, participants will explore innovative research methods that connect AI, Communication, and Media Studies. The Autumn School includes a mix of practical workshops and keynote lectures, offering participants the chance to develop practical skills using classical and AI-based methods.

In 2025, the AI-focused sessions are tailored to the needs of media researchers and scholars at the early stages of their careers. Participants will work with relevant case studies and practical examples in media analysis, digital journalism, and content curation. Topics include bias in content classification, audience segmentation, and the complexity of multimedia annotation. Participants will apply AI tools to media-related datasets through interactive workshops and exercises and learn through hands-on experience.

Applications are welcome for the following tracks (not exclusively):

Track 1: AI in Research Practice: Foundations, Methods, and Ethics

 1.

    Foundations of current AI tools

 2.

Accountable Literature Search Using AI Tools

 3.

Track 2: Communication, Audiences, and Civic Cultures in the Age of AI

 2.

Digital Citizenship and Media Literacy in an AI-Mediated World

 3.
