[Commlist] AHRC/M4C Funded Collaborative Doctoral Award on the Birmingham Film and Video Workshop (1979-1989)

Birmingham City University will be hosting an AHRC/Midlands 4Cities 
funded Collaborative Doctoral Award devoted to the Birmingham Film and 
Video Workshop.

The project ‘From Independent Film to Integrated Praxis’ is an exciting 
opportunity to create new knowledge on this prominent West Midlands film 
organisation, which operated between 1979-1989 under the leadership of 
Roger Shannon.

The Birmingham Film and Video Workshop pioneered an innovative model of 
‘integrated praxis', fusing independent film production with mentoring 
for regionally underrepresented communities. This resulted in 25 film 
outputs, as well as TV dramas and documentaries. These productions 
represent a significant body of work that documented the challenges 
facing diverse and diasporic communities, whilst also dealing with 
issues of gender inequality and contemporary youth subcultures.

The Birmingham Film and Video Workshop remains an organisation of 
regional and national significance, and this Collaborative Doctoral 
Award project will enhance knowledge and understanding of its 
organisation, outputs and working practices.

The project will be led by Professor Xavier Mendik (Birmingham City 
University) and Professor Justin Smith (De Montfort university). The 
project also benefits from the participation of the BFI as its primary 
industry partner. As part of the project, the student will be introduced 
to key colleagues across the BFI, will be given opportunities to visit 
the BFI National Archive and learn from experts in this area to better 
understand the work of the archive and the curatorial practices taking 
place to preserve the films produced by the Birmingham Film and Video 
Workshop.

For 2025 entry, Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership is 
offering up to 87 fully funded PhD studentships for eligible students in 
arts and humanities through an Open Competition and 23 studentships 
through Collaborative Doctoral Awards (CDA). CDA projects provide 
diverse and unique project opportunities with national, regional, and 
local partner organisations.

The deadline for AHRC funding applications is 13th January 2025 (noon UK 
time).
