[Commlist] Latin American cinema: Between theory and practice workshops

Tue May 28 22:15:36 GMT 2024

Please join us in June and July at BFI Southbank for our third series of workshops devoted to re-envisioning film theory in a global context. ‘Latin American Cinema: Between Theory and Practice’ comprises three sessions, which can be booked separately or enjoyed together. For session 1, on 19 June, ‘Depth of Field, Class Conflict and the Latin American Cinema of Domestic Service’, Tiago de Luca (University of Warwick) will focus on depth-of-field theories in ‘cinema of domestic work’. This session will consider whether André Bazin’s foundational writings on depth of field can be applied to recent Latin American films about the relationship between employers and live-in domestic workers. In session 2, on 26 June, ‘/Passages/: Travelling in and Out of Film Through Brazilian Geography’, Lúcia Nagib (University of Reading) will present her prize-winning 2019 trans-artistic film, /Passages/, which explores the connections film has with other art forms through interviews with a number of Brazilian film industry figures. The film will be followed by a Q&A with Nagib.

For session 3, on 3 July, ‘Theorising Mexican Cinema Through Archive-Films’, David Wood (UCL) will explore filmmaking as theoretical praxis in documentary and experimental archival films from Mexico. The session will consider how new readings of Mexican film history are created in ‘nostalgia compilation’ movies by filmmakers such as Nancy Cárdenas, Carlos Monsiváis, Marcela Fernández, and Ximena Cuevas. Wed 19 June, Wed 26 June, and Wed 3 July, 18:30-20:30, NFT4 [formerly BFI Studio] For further information and to book tickets: _https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default.asp?doWork::WScontent::loadArticle=Load&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::article_id=EC502862-44FD-4598-98BE-3305EE802CA0&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=E11D7971-F608-4010-9D1D-89FC191B1982 <https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default.asp?doWork::WScontent::loadArticle=Load&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::article_id=EC502862-44FD-4598-98BE-3305EE802CA0&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=E11D7971-F608-4010-9D1D-89FC191B1982>_ The workshops are organised in partnership with BFI Southbank as part of the AHRC Global Circulations of Film Theory network, _https://globalfilmtheory.net/ <https://globalfilmtheory.net/>__._
