Call for contributors for edited book 'Remaking Fashion Media: Sustainable Narratives and Visions for Change' (Bloomsbury Academic)

We are seeking expressions of interest from contributors for an edited book 'Remaking Fashion Media: Sustainable Narratives and Visions for Change', which is contracted by Bloomsbury Academic.

Fashion is defined by its media yet limited attention has been paid to the intersection between sustainability and the fashion media. This is a pressing concern given the ‘uncompromising deadline’ of less than a decade to avert the most catastrophic effects of climate change  The issue is further complicated by the symbiotic relationship that exists between fashion media and advertisers, which works to limit the freedom of journalists to hold brands accountable.

Given this challenging context, what does it mean for fashion media to become sustainable? Is this even possible? These are the questions addressed by /Remaking Fashion Media: Sustainable Narratives and Visions of Change/, an edited book contracted by Bloomsbury Academic. The book will include academic studies as well as a range of written and visual content by contemporary media and communications professionals, which collectively explore the many ways in which fashion media is unsustainable: in terms of greenwashing, producing content that promotes over-consumption, and exploitative labour practices, such as unpaid internships and the speed of content turnover. Yet this title will also showcase the ways in which media can be used as a tool for systemic change, both within the industry and in terms of social change on the part of citizens and consumers. The project is edited by Rosie Findlay (City, University of London), Morna Laing (The New School, Parsons Paris) and Johannes Reponen (Condé Nast College).

We invite proposed contributions from scholars, journalists , image-makers, and activists who produce or research fashion media and/or fashion communications. We particularly invite contributors from the Global South and indigenous cultures. The proposed contributions may be image-based (editorial photographs, art work, social media content, etc., although please note that you will need to be the copyright holder or be able to acquire copyright permission from the holder for us to include this content) or written (a 5000-word academic chapter, or shorter essay, reflection, dialogue or testimonial, etc.) We welcome a diversity of interpretations of this theme, however some areas they may consider includes:

  * Resale apps for second-hand, vintage or luxury clothing;
  * Branding for 'sustainable' or 'ethical' fashion labels,
  * Counter-hegemonic articulations of fashionability that has appeared
    in fashion writing, film or image,
  * Accounts of efforts to transform working practices within fashion
    media and/or communications, or
  * Representations of fashion and sustainability in niche or
    alternative media.

Please send a proposal of 250 words + a short bio to Morna Laing ((mlaing /at/ newchool.edu)) by Tuesday 31st October 2023 if you would like to propose a contribution to be considered for inclusion in the book.
