Call for Papers

*‘For Real Life?’*

*How /Bluey/ Captured the World //*

We are inviting chapter contributions to a proposed collection from Lexington on the children’s animation, /Bluey /(ABC, BBC, Disney).

/Bluey /is a powerhouse of popular culture, not only in the world of children’s media, but for influencing audiences and markets of all ages, digitally, locally and internationally. /Bluey /streams in over 60 countries, including on the Disney Channel, and has become a booming brand, with tens of millions of toys and branded clothes selling out of K-Mart, Target, and Walmart alone.

As the biggest Australian children’s exports since /The Wiggles/, the show has placed its home of Brisbane on the map. The show is acclaimed for its quintessentially Australian humour and sensibility, and won hearts for its portrayal of conscious parenting and play-based learning, where stereotypes of nuclear families (and fathers in particular) evolve into something more contemporary. Celebrations and criticisms of the cartoon family of dogs abound, with fans on social media and mainstream news media quick to weigh in on any opinion. Likewise, the show’s dialogue with Australian and family cultures as well as its metafictionality inspires audience participation and editorialising through online engagement with episodes and issues.

This proposed collection explores /Bluey/’s cultural impacts through intersectional cultural studies and textual analysis. Chapters may address the cultural context and media dynamics of the show, and/or conduct a textual analysis of episodes through a range of lenses and disciplines, including media effects, psychology, gender studies, place studies, sports studies, mythology, animal studies and anthropomorphism, etc.

Please email chapter proposals of no more than 250 words and a short biography to Glen Thomas at (gj.thomas /at/ qut.edu.au) <mailto:(gj.thomas /at/ qut.edu.au)>before *Monday 7 August *

Please note that this volume is at the proposal stage.
