one Knight Chair in Health and Medical Journalism
two tenure-track positions in public relations
----------------------
The Department of Journalism in the Grady College at the University of
Georgia invites applications for the Knight Chair in Health and Medical
Journalism, a tenured faculty position, at the rank of Associate or full
Professor. We seek a health and medical journalist of national or
international stature to direct and expand the professional master’s
degree program currently in its 13th year of teaching students to cover
health, medicine and the science behind them across emerging and
established media markets, platforms and audiences.
The Knight Chair instructs, supervises and advises graduate students as
they report and produce news stories for the College’s laboratory
newsroom as well as for professional media organizations. An
entrepreneurial sense of the possible and a willingness to experiment
with new forms of news media storytelling to engage audiences around
health, medical and related science topics are essential as we seek to
deepen ties between the College and the profession. The chair will have
the opportunity to create programs and collaborations with journalism
organizations, internal University of Georgia programs (e.g., College of
Public Health), external health and medical-related organizations (e.g.,
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and others (e.g., the
Medical College of Georgia and the Morehouse School of Medicine). The
chair also may periodically teach undergraduate courses related to
health and medical journalism.
We seek an innovative, digital-savvy health and medical journalist with
expertise in recognizing and reporting on current and emerging health,
medical and related science topics, using basic reporting and
interviewing, datasets and secondary information sources for story ideas
and reporting, bringing diverse voices into coverage and using a broad
range of media channels and platforms to deliver health and medical news
stories (i.e., multimedia reporting). The candidate should be adept at
using and teaching how to produce and disseminate health and medical
stories using interactive, immersive and multi-platform media formats.
Digital news gathering skills and the ability to teach the fundamentals
of health and medical reporting and journalism, including the basics of
data-based reporting, are essential.
Applicants should submit a letter of application, a résumé or curriculum
vita and names, addresses and phone numbers of three references.
Applications from women and individuals from groups underrepresented in
the profession and higher education are strongly encouraged. Screening
of applications will begin in mid-October 2022, with the chair holder
joining the faculty of Grady College in August 2023. Questions may be
directed to the search committee chair, Dr. Keith Herndon ((klhern /at/ uga.edu)).
