[Commlist] Routledge Advances in Transmedia Studies: New Titles

Fri Nov 06 12:56:26 GMT 2020

Matthew Freeman is pleased to announce a number of new titles published under the banner of the Routledge Advances in Transmedia Studies <https://www.routledge.com/Routledge-Advances-in-Transmedia-Studies/book-series/RATMS> series, which publishes research that sits at the cutting edge of today's global cross-platform media landscape, considering emerging transmedia applications in and across industries, cultures, arts, practices and research methodologies. The series is especially interested in research exploring the future possibilities of an interconnected media landscape that looks beyond the field of media studies, broadening to include socio-political contexts, education, experience design, mixed-reality, journalism, the proliferation of screens, as well as art- and writing-based dimensions to do with the role of digital platforms. New titles include work on a theory of place-based socially engaged transmedia practice, new methodologies and research strategies for the field of transmediality, the future of transmedia telenovelas in Brazil, and independent transmedia journalism in Turkey. Full details are below, as is a call for further proposals.

*The Revolution of Transmedia Storytelling through Place: Pervasive, Ambient and Situated <https://www.routledge.com/The-Revolution-of-Transmedia-Storytelling-through-Place-Pervasive-Ambient/Hancox/p/book/9780367222383>*
*/By Donna Hancox/*
This book proposes that the theory and practice of transmedia storytelling must be re-considered from a social impact and community development perspective, and that time has come for a rigorous critique of the limited ways in which it has been commonly represented. This book asserts that the futures of transmedia storytelling for social impact or change are deeply tied to understandings of place grounded in human geography. Through a series of case studies of projects which challenge the status quo of transmedia, this book explores the elements of transmedia that can be used to amplify under-represented voices and make stories that signal a more inclusive and sustainable future.

*Theory, Development and Strategy in Transmedia Storytelling <https://www.routledge.com/Theory-Development-and-Strategy-in-Transmedia-Storytelling/Gambarato-Alzamora-Tarcia/p/book/9780367343040>*
*/By Renira Rampazzo Gambarato, Geane Carvalho Alzamora and Lorena Tárcia/*
This book explores transmedia dynamics in various facets of fiction and nonfiction transmedia studies. Moving beyond the presentation/definition of transmediality as a field of study, the authors examine novel advancements in the theory, methodological development, and strategic planning of transmedia storytelling. Drawing upon a theoretical foundation grounded in Peircean semiotics and reflected in the methodological approaches to fiction and nonfiction transmedia projects, the chapters delve into diverse case studies, such as The Handmaid’s Tale and mega sporting events like the Olympics and FIFA World Cup, that illustrate the applications of our own methods and the implications of the logic behind transmedia dynamics.

*Telenovelas and Transformation: Saving Brazil’s Television Industry <https://www.routledge.com/Telenovelas-and-Transformation-Saving-Brazils-Television-Industry/Svartman/p/book/9780367543686>
/By Rosane Svartman/*
This book investigates how telenovelas may be the key to the future of Brazilian television and how this content can survive in an interconnected media landscape. Recognised telenovela writer and scholar Rosane Svartman considers the particular characteristics of the telenovela format – number of episodes, melodrama influence, and influence of the audience on future writing – to explore how these can be preserved on multimedia platforms, and the challenges this change may present. Merging empirical practices and theory, this book will be of great interest to scholars and students of transmedia storytelling, television studies, and Latin American media, as well as professionals working in these areas.

*Transmediality in Independent Journalism: The Turkish Case <https://www.routledge.com/Transmediality-in-Independent-Journalism-The-Turkish-Case/Gursoy/p/book/9780367859138>
/By Dilek Gürsoy/*
Transmediality in Independent Journalism investigates mainstream journalism and its escape routes to independence through transmedia strategies. Within the scope of the latest debates in Turkey, the author argues that the function of transmediality in Turkish journalism is gradually shifting from being only a commercial entity to becoming a political system for social change, a survival mechanism for independent journalists to reach out to diverse audiences, and gain back the public trust. Looking beyond the case of Turkey, this study will be an important addition to the literature on rethinking journalistic form and practice, teaching transmedia strategies, and social communication.
