*Crafts, Trades, and Techniques of Early Cinema*

XVIe International Domitor Conference
Archive Partners: Cinémathèque française et Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé
Online – 17 - 20 November 2020 -  www.domitor2020.org

Calling all film historians, students, and film enthusiasts!

Since 1985, Domitor, the International Society for the Study of Early Cinema, has been bringing together those interested in cinema from its emergence to its institutionalization around 1915. Every two years, this association holds an international conference on a specific theme, and each colloquium gives rise to a publication (for details of previous conferences, see: https://domitor.org/conferences/). The two official languages of the association are English and French: papers are presented in one of these two languages.

While we were unable to hold the conference as planned in Paris due to the pandemic, the Domitor 2020 Paris Conference will be held online from November 17-20, 2020, making it more widely accessible. To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the first public ticketed screening via the Lumière Cinematograph, this year’s theme is the “Crafts, Trades, and Techniques of Early Cinema.” At the crossroads of the “cultural series” of photography and the performing arts, the cinematograph engendered the invention of new trades, gestures, and technical processes. You will find the complete program on our website: www.domitor2020.org

How to attend the conference?
Presentations are now available on the Domitor 2020 Conference site. Please be sure to register for the round table sessions, meetings and online exchanges that will take place, November 17- 20, 2020 (www.domitor2020.org).

Free online screenings accessible to all
In addition, thanks to the partnership with the Cinémathèque française and the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé, online screenings will be held in connection with the conference’s theme.

On the Cinémathèque française platform HENRI (https://www.cinematheque.fr/henri/), you can view: 1.   Les Collections d’appareils du Conservatoire des techniques (Chaab Mahmoud, 2008)

2.   The Brillant Biograph: Earliest Moving Images of Europe (1897-1902) 1897-1902, selection

Thanks to the Fondation Jérôme-Seydoux-Pathé, you may also view six Pathé films on early cameras, produced for the Fondation:

1.     La caméra réversible de Bunzli et Continsouza  (The reversible camera of Bunzli and Continsouza) 2.     Le Chrono Pathé-Lumière Transformé (The transformed Chrono Pathé-Lumière) 3.     Le Chrono Pathé renforcé de type A.B.R. (The reinforced ABR Type Chrono Pathé) 4.     La caméra Pathé Professionnelle Type (The Pathé Professional Type camera)
5.     La caméra reportage Pathé (The Pathé reportage camera)

In addition, you can also access documents such as Marcel Mayer's handwritten notebook (circa 1920) dedicated to the factory and laboratory:

We would have preferred the colloquium be held in person to allow for the constructive off-the-cuff discussions that can only take place over a meal or a cup of coffee, but we hope that this format will allow a wider audience to follow and participate in the debates. Please invite your colleagues and/or students to attend the conference!
