Book description:
This book investigates public service broadcasting (PSB) models in post-authoritarian regimes, and offers a critical inspection of the development of a Western European-originated PSB system in Asian transitional societies, in particular in Indonesia since the 1990’s. Placing the case of Indonesia’s PSB within the context of global media liberalization, this book traces the development of public service broadcasting in post-authoritarian societies, including the arrival of neoliberal policy and the growth of media oligarchs that favor free market media systems over public interest media systems. The book argues that Western European PSB models have travelled to new democracies, and that autocratic legacies embedded in former state-owned broadcasters have resisted pro-democratic media pressures.

Book endorsements:
This book presents a fascinating and illuminating account on the political struggles to turn Indonesia’s state TV and radio channels into a public-oriented broadcasting institution. Based on multiple research techniques and an admirable data set, it contributes to studies of media and politics, demonstrating how authoritarian and post-authoritarian politics shape the course of PSB policy. (Thomas Hanitzsch, Professor of Communication, Department of Media and Communication, LMU Munich, German)

Masduki’s comprehensive account of Indonesia’s broadcasting policies – starting from the colonial past to the struggle for PSB after Suharto - shows how complex it is to develop public media as an alternative to state interference and market pressure in a post-authoritarian context. At the same time this excellent study of an Indonesian media scholar demonstrates how much the world’s third largest democracy deserves public media. (Jo Bardoel, Emeritus Professor of Media Policy, University of Amsterdam and Nijmegen)

This book is highly relevant for policy makers and media scholars with a keen interest in the histories and roots of public service media. The author shows that in spite of the decentralized telecommunications infrastructure that ensures coverage in the remote corners of the vast Indonesian archipelago, the appeal of public broadcasting for a changing and diverse audience is lagging behind. (Leen d'Haenens, Institute for Media Studies, KU Leuven, Belgium)
