Thu Nov 21 13:23:55 GMT 2019
Seeking candidate for a cross-disciplinary, practice-led PhD project
(Media Studies and Public Health) offered by the University of
Tasmania’s Media School (based in Hobart, Australia)
**
*The Media and Public Health Practice-led PhD Project*
For the past decade there has been a growing awareness of the value of a
humanities-based approaches in the study of public health. This is
manifest in the inclusion of social, cultural and environment factors in
understanding health and wellbeing, and an emphasis on addressing social
determinants of health and wellbeing to improve outcomes for individuals
and communities.
According to the Primary Health Network’s Needs Assessment Report
(2019-2022), Tasmania continues to fall below the rest of Australia in
many key public health indictors. This recognised need, combined with
the state’s stable and regional population, makes it an ideal subject
for rural and public health analysis. Production of media texts will
address particular health needs in Tasmanian communities. Accompanying
the production of the text/s will be an exegesis. This will be grounded
in public health, community development and media studies theoretical
frameworks.
The project will be administered and supervised jointly with the School
of Medicine, the Centre for Rural Health and the Media School. The
supervisors currently work together to deliver the Medical Aid Films
Research Advisory Group.
Research questions:
* How might the theoretical domains of community development, public
health and media studies coalesce in the space of public health
improvements in rural and regional areas?
* What is the relationship between media production and health
outcomes in rural and regional areas of disadvantage?**
