The teaching ethos in the Department of Film and Television emphasises
the combination of film history, theory and criticism with creative
filmmaking practices across fiction, documentary, animation and the
development of other planned activities such as screenwriting. The
successful candidate will have an international profile, demonstrable
through their teaching, research projects and publications. The
appointee will play a key role in developing collaborations with
international universities and developing innovative research and
teaching strategies with an international focus. Experience in academic
leadership and a strong understanding of the current research and
teaching environments in the UK and of research opportunities in
international arenas are essential.
In 2017, Bristol was designated a UNESCO City of Film in recognition of
its global status in film production, film culture and film education.
World renowned film and television companies, including the BBC, Channel
Four and Aardman, have production facilities in Bristol. These are
located alongside a range of innovative production companies, digital
media centres, film festivals, and independent exhibition and filmmaking
venues. The appointee will help develop and build new partnerships with
Bristol’s film industry and culture.
The Department of Film and Television draws upon more than fifty year of
experience in teaching film and television studies with creative
practice in filmmaking. The department has recently moved into new
bespoke premises which includes a 200-seat cinema, dual-projection
lecture room, production studios, animation suites, editing suites and a
screening room. Researchers and teachers in the department have
world-leading expertise in an array of film and television practices,
forms, histories and genres.
