[Commlist] WHITELISTING - vital housekeeping message - IMPORTANT

Wed Nov 20 20:36:27 GMT 2019

Dear commlist members,

The commlist has been marked as spam too often, either by list members who accidentally marked it as spam, or who didn't mark it as *not* being spam when it was automatically flagged as spam.

The list has been down for several days, because of this. Our upstream ISP is receiving too many spam complaints, and needs us to deal with this, otherwise they'll stop hosting us. The technical team behind the commlist (the folks at Nordstack Services OÜ), also volunteers, have been really working hard to get the commlist going again. We're now going to let a few messages through, as a test.

We now need your help, quite urgently.

1/If you're are using MICROSOFT OUTLOOK (or variations)
++ You need to explicitly whitelist the commlist (in general) by adding the commlist.org domain to the safe senders list, see below for guidelines ++ in addition, go to your junk email box, and if there are any commlist.org messages there, you'll need to mark them as NOT spam. ++ In future, make sure never to mark commlist.org messages as spam, as this is damaging the list

2/If you're on a service like GMAIL or HOTMAIL
++ You need to explicitly whitelist the commlist (in general), see below for guidelines ++ in addition, go to your spam/junk box, and if there are any commlist.org messages there, you'll need to mark them as NOT spam. ++ In future, make sure never to mark them as spam, as this is damaging the list

3/If you're on a university server, or a smaller commercial server
++ please contact your computer centre and/or helpdesk and explicitly
ask to whitelist the domain @commlist.org.

+++++++++++++++

We might need to tighten our automatic unsubscribe tool, triggered when emails bounce. This implies that you might be automatically unsubscribed when only a few emails bounce (we have been quite lenient so far).

Also, we might need to reinstate the old ban on hotmail.com email addresses being subscribed to the list, combined with domains that use microsoft outlook (e.g., uantwerpen.be, vub.be, uclouvain.be, lse.ac.uk, gold.ac.uk, bournemouth.ac.uk, and of course outlook.com), as they are the companies that are more hostile towards us.

Still, if enough list members get the commlist whitelisted, we might be able to solve the problem in a more elegant way.

So now is the time to do something for the commlist ;)

Kind regards,
Nico
