Vibrations United: Music, Technology & Diaspora

SSO # 6 is being held in São Luís, capital of the state of Maranhão 
largely because this city is the Jamaica of Brazil. Since the 1970sSão 
Luís is the place in the world – besides where Jamaica itself and the 
United Kingdom – where reggae music has being living and growing as the 
popular culture of the people. Reggae is now rooted in this exuberant 
state of northeastern Brazil, marked by the resistance of the 
quilombolas (maroons) and the indigenous people to the European invasion 
and its consequences, building a society of great vitality and 
traditional expression, but where was allowed itself to reverberate 
intensely by reggae music, in a celebration of the black diaspora. This 
process vibrated from the beginning through radiolas, no less than local 
versions of Jamaican sound systems. Adopted primarily among the less 
favored social strata, this culture is today an unavoidable reference in 
the region for all classes and ages.

As with the previous five SSO events and especially the most recent one 
in April 2019 in Naples, Italy, this event will draw very substantially 
on the support and participation of local sound system professionals and 
their audiences, local reggae and educational institutions, as well as 
local and international researchers and artists.

With the theme Vibrations United: Music, Technology & Diaspora themain 
subject of the event is the alternative culture of sound systems that 
offers us new possibilities for coexistence and occupation of public 
spaces in large cities and in the countryside. Reggae sound system 
vibrations are shaking objects, people, and concepts, currently 
establishing sonic connections between practitioners, scholars and 
admirers in public spaces on five continents. Among the fastest-growing 
street cultures in the world today, sound crews that were materialized 
firstly by the people of Jamaica bring technology, music, attitudes, 
values, feelings, and thoughts to social classes, genders, ethnicities, 
identity definitions originated in the black diaspora and adopted by a 
pulsating human diversity. The implications of this planetary Caribbean 
culture for understanding our actions so far and for establishing new 
theoretical and practical lines of conduct will be the subject of 
discussion at this SSO event.

The conference is conceived as a space for discussion for academic but 
also practical resonance, including sound engeneering, performances and 
artistic presentations, exhibitions, sound systems sessions, workshops 
and other forms of expression. At the same time, the conference will be 
a sounding board for dialogues of such phenomena with diverse areas of 
thought, notably Cultural and Postcolonial Studies, Sound Studies, 
Popular Music Studies, Film Studies, Critical Black Studies and 
Caribbean Critical Theory.

Artists, engineers, musicians, selectors, academics, activists and all 
those directly or indirectly participating in the sound systems and 
radiolas culture are welcome. Contributions can be creative, practical, 
or research-based. It may be in the form of a workshop, talk, film 
screening, display, or demonstration. We welcome all engaging with sound 
system music, culture, community, gender, technology, dance, oral 
histories, graphics, business, marketing etc, especially from global and 
intergenerational perspectives.

- Auditory epistemologies

- DIY sonic cultures and technologies

- Sonic resistance and urban space

Vibrations United: Music, Technology & Diaspora was conceived to house 
partnerships between the Federal Institute of Maranhão (IFMA), Federal 
University of Maranhão (UFMA), State University of Maranhão (UEMA), 
Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and local social movement 
partners. Over three days and interacting with the city of São Luís and 
its inhabitants, in its rich academic, social, political and musical 
dimensions, the event includes lectures, roundtables, exhibitions and 
film screenings. It will also host sound system and radiola sessions 
with local and international artists in some of the city's most iconic 
social spaces. The event will also provide the occasion for a SSO 
International Research Network meeting and the opportunity for a 
short-term research project in the São Luís radiolas scenario.

Vibrações Unidas: Música, tecnologia e diáspora

A sexta edição do SSO será realizada em São Luís, capital do estado do 
Maranhão, em grande parte porque a cidade é a Jamaica do Brasil. Desde a 
década de 1970, São Luís é o lugar do mundo - além da Jamaica e do Reino 
Unido - onde o reggae vive e cresce como cultura do povo. O reggae agora 
está enraizado neste exuberante estado do nordeste do Brasil, marcado 
pela resistência dos quilombolas e dos povos indígenas à invasão 
européia e suas consequências, construindo uma sociedade de grande 
vitalidade e expressão tradicional, mas que se permitiu reverberar 
intensamente pela cultura reggae, em uma celebração da diáspora negra. 
Este processo vibrou desde o início por meio das radiolas, nada menos 
que versões locais dos sound systems jamaicanos, além de criar uma 
maneira própria de se comunicar, dançar e ouvir a música reggae. Adotada 
principalmente entre os estratos sociais menos favorecidos, essa cultura 
é hoje uma referência incontornável na região para todas as classes e 
idades.

Assim como nos cinco eventos anteriores do SSO e, especialmente, o mais 
recente em abril de 2019, em Nápoles, na Itália, este evento contará com 
o apoio e a participação substancial dos profissionais locais dos 
sistema de som, radiolas e de seu público, instituições educacionais e 
relacionadas com o reggae, bem como pesquisadores e artistas locais e 
internacionais.

Com o tema Vibrações Unidas: Música, tecnologia e diáspora,o assunto 
principal do evento é a cultura alternativa dos sound systems e 
radiolas, que nos oferece novas possibilidades de convivência e ocupação 
de espaços públicos nas grandes cidades e no campo. As vibrações dos 
sound systems de reggae estremecem objetos, pessoas e conceitos, 
estabelecendo conexões sônicas entre praticantes, acadêmicos e 
admiradores em espaços públicos nos cinco continentes. Entre as culturas 
de rua que mais crescem no mundo hoje, os sistemas de som que primeiro 
foram materializados pelo povo da Jamaica trazem tecnologia, música, 
atitudes, valores, sentimentos e pensamentos para classes sociais, 
gêneros e etnias, entre outras definições identitárias originadas da 
diáspora negra e adotadas por uma diversidade humana pulsante. As 
implicações dessa cultura caribenha planetária para a compreensão de 
nossas ações até o momento e para o estabelecimento de novas linhas de 
conduta teóricas e práticas serão objeto de discussão neste evento da SSO.

A conferência é concebida como um espaço de discussão para ressonância 
acadêmica, mas também prática, incluindo engenharia de som, performances 
e apresentações artísticas, exposições, sessões de sound systems e 
radiolas, workshops e outras formas de expressão. Ao mesmo tempo, a 
conferência será uma caixa de ressonância para diálogos de tais 
fenômenos com diversas áreas de conhecimento, notadamente Estudos 
Culturais e Pós-coloniais, Estudos de Som, Estudos de Música Popular, 
Estudos de Cinema, Estudos Críticos Negros e Teoria Crítica do Caribe.

Artistas, engenheiros, músicos, seletores, DJs, acadêmicos, ativistas e 
todos aqueles que participam direta ou indiretamente da cultura dos 
sound systems e radiolas são bem-vindos. As contribuições podem ser 
criativas, práticas ou baseadas em pesquisas. Podem ser na forma de um 
workshop, palestra, exibição de filme, exposição e outras manifestações. 
Saudamos a  todos os envolvidos com música, cultura, comunidade, gênero, 
tecnologias dos sistema de som, dança, histórias orais, design, turismo, 
negócios, marketing, entre outras áreas, especialmente nas perspectivas 
globais e intergeracionais.

Contribuições serão bem-vindas (mas não limitadas a):

- Epistemologias auditivas

- Conhecimento vernacular e tecnologia de rua

Vibrações Unidas: Música, Tecnologia e Diásporafoi concebida para 
abrigar parcerias entre o Instituto Federal do Maranhão (IFMA), 
Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA), Universidade Estadual do 
Maranhão (UEMA), Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) e redes 
locais parceiras dos movimentos sociais. Durante três dias, interagindo 
com a cidade de São Luís e seus habitantes, em suas ricas dimensões 
acadêmicas, sociais, políticas e musicais, o evento inclui palestras, 
mesas redondas, exposições e exibições de filmes. Ele também irá sediar 
sessões de sound systems e radiolas com artistas locais e 
internacionais, em alguns dos espaços sociais mais emblemáticos da 
cidade. O evento também proporcionará a ocasião para uma reunião da Rede 
Internacional de Pesquisa da SSO e a oportunidade para uma imersão de 
pesquisa de curto prazo no cenário das radiolas e sound systems de São Luís.
