The Faculty of Humanities offers the opportunity of a lectureship for
recent graduates. We offer the opportunity to teach in a dynamic
academic environment in which new didactic methods are developed and
where you will receive support for further career development. The Media
and Information program is taught in English.
The Faculty of Humanities encourages applications from candidates with
academic ambition. This position is meant for recent graduates who would
like to become acquainted with working in an academic environment. If
requested, lecturers will receive guidance on a PhD or PhD-proposal to
be worked on in one’s own time.
Job description
The ideal candidate would have demonstrable knowledge of the study of
New Media and Digital Culture in the humanities, especially in the areas
of digital methods and critical internet culture. He or she will also
have strong affinity with the areas of media arts, media history, media
theory and social media critique. Up-to-date Internet skills are
essential, as is current knowledge of digital culture as evidenced by
active participation in online culture and digital media scholarship.
Practical experience in working analytically with online platforms
(e.g., Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube) and
web-based applications and tools (e.g., social media analytics) is
highly desirable.
The new media and digital culture team is part of the Media Studies
department and concerns itself with research strategies for the critical
study of internet culture. The Lecturer will teach in the Media and
Information BA, in courses concerned with such topics as media theory,
new media practice, new media research methods, media history as well as
contemporary themes in information and digital culture.
Together with other lecturers you will participate in a comprehensive
introductory programme. You will be supervised closely during the first
year of your appointment. Additional didactical training is also part of
the appointment. Based on the candidate's educational portfolio,
previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration.
Tasks:
Preparation and implementation of education at the BA level in
Media Studies;
keeping track of the literature and integrating new insights into
the teaching;
supervising and coaching students;
grading assignments;
contributing to course evaluation.
Requirements
Relevant MA degree, recently obtained (2018 or 2019);
experience with digital and audio-visual equipment; affinity with
ICT in academic education;
capable of teaching at a BA level in Media and Information
(especially in courses in New Media and digital culture); some
experience in teaching, e.g. as teaching assistant, is a plus;
reliable team player;
thorough knowledge of English; preferably some knowledge of Dutch.

Appointment
There are 3 positions available, meant for young academics to gain
working experience. Therefore, the appointment will be on a temporary
basis for a period of two years (starting 1 August 2019), for 19 to 22
hours a week. The gross monthly salary will range from €2,709 to €4,274
(scale 10), based on a full-time appointment of 38 hours a week. The
Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
