Professor in Media and Communication Studies

Ref AP-2018/124

Södertörn University is investing in the field of media and is advertising three professorships: in journalism; media technology; and media and communication studies. In a time of rapid technological change, the role of media in society is changing both its form and its content. Media research in the borderlands between technology, society and culture is becoming increasingly important for our critical understanding of the information society. The three professors will lead and develop multidisciplinary research into this new media landscape, with special responsibility for research related to the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. This is done in each subject, through cooperation with the surrounding community and in various multidisciplinary contexts.

Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University is a research-intensive environment, characterised by nationally and internationally oriented research and education based on the social sciences and humanities. Research in Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University is characterised by its studies of the contemporary digital media society using a historicising and critical perspective. It also emphasises interpretive perspectives and qualitative methods. The subject has around twenty staff, and offers Bachelor’s level education as degree programmes and freestanding courses, as well as offering a two-years Master’s programme and providing doctoral education in the research area of Critical and Cultural Theory.

Job description
The new professorship in Media and Communication Studies will further develop research in the subject, with a particular focus on the Baltic sea region and Eastern Europe. The professor will contribute to a strong and multidisciplinary research environment at Södertörn University by cooperating with other subjects at the university.

The position includes research-related tasks at 60 per cent of full-time. These are divided between the professor’s own research and subject development, which includes higher seminars, and applications for external research funding in cooperation with other researchers. The remaining 40 per cent includes teaching, examination, and course development at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Teaching is primarily conducted in Swedish. Some courses on international Master’s programmes are taught in English. Tasks also include administrative duties, internationalisation and third stream activities. The position requires a high degree of presence and participation in collegial work.

Qualifications
To qualify for employment as a professor of Media and Communication Studies, the applicant must have demonstrated educational and scholarly expertise in the subject of Media and Communication Studies. Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or the equivalent, is advantageous. For this position, the applicant must be able to teach in Swedish or English. The applicant is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within the first two years of employment. Please refer to item 2.1.1 in Södertörn University’s Appointments Procedure, available at https://www.sh.se/english/sodertorn-university/meet-sodertorn-university/this-is-sodertorn-university/vacant-positions.

Grounds for assessment
Educational and scholarly expertise relevant to the position and the required qualifications is demonstrated through autonomous research that considerably exceeds that necessary for employment as an associate professor, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The applicant must have demonstrated good ability in building, leading and developing high quality research and must have experience of supervising doctoral students. The applicant must also have demonstrated good skills in communicating knowledge of research results. Other contributions to scholarly work other than their own research are also of merit, e.g. commissions as faculty examiner or external expert.

Educational expertise is assessed on the basis of the ability to develop, lead and conduct high quality education at different levels, educational development work and participation in linking research to education at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Educational expertise also includes a commitment to education and a well-developed educational approach that is presented in writing, as well as formal training in teaching and learning in higher education or the equivalent competence. The applicant must also have the personal skills necessary to meet the demands of the position and to be able to represent the university in a way that benefits its activities.
