[ecrea] call for papers Women on Spanish TV

Thu Sep 27 13:46:40 GMT 2018

Women on Spanish TV

We would like to organise a panel on the mediation of contemporary female subjectivity in Spanish popular culture, with a particular emphasis on television, in keeping with the conference focus on visual culture. The roles of women are scrutinised, interrogated and represented through a variety of TV genres. Mothers, daughters, working women, women in power, all roles are framed by the conventions of each genre. This panel thus explores issues around identity construction, character engagement, role model potential and interpretation processes, keeping in mind that Spanish viewers have easy access to a wide range of international TV programmes and thus engage in a transnational viewing experience.

*Topics may include but are not limited to*:

Working women, Maternities, Post-feminism in Spain, Women on TV, Celebrity culture and women, popular feminisms

*Possible research questions include but are not limited to:*

How visible are women on Spanish TV and in what role? How are female subjectivities negotiated in different TV genres?

How  are female subjectivities framed by the format of the TV genre? Do broadcasters and viewers value one over another?

To what extent is character engagement dependent on genre, hybridisation, actors, broadcasting time?

What is the feminist role model function of /series míticas/ such as /Anillos de oro, Turno de oficio, Cuéntame como pasó, Farmacia de guardia, or Periodistas? /

How have critics dealt with women on TV?

To what extent is the continued application of Anglophone theory in a Spanish context useful? Can the analysis of the Spanish productions contribute to the theorisation of the media representation of women?

How does the reception of international productions compare to that of indigenous television?

If you are interested in forming part of this panel then please send us an abstract (for a 20 minute paper) of up to 200 words and a brief bio by _Friday 5 October_: (_abigail.loxham /at/ liverpool.ac.uk) <mailto:(abigail.loxham /at/ liverpool.ac.uk)>_
