National or Transnational German Cinema? Transnational encounters 
through Film and Events

Globalising film cultures and international co-productions stand in 
contrast to the traditional notion of a national cinema. Germany has a 
long tradition of filmmaking and a close connection between the nation 
and its films has been argued.

In a shifting context of production, distribution and audiences, this 
volume seeks to explore the notion of a national or transnational German 
cinema. This includes new distribution channels such as streaming 
platforms and online film festivals, as well as the audience engagement 
that transcends national borders in addition to the cinema space. 
Increasingly international film production and financing further 
heightens the transnational aspects of cinema, a quality that is often 
neglected in marketing and branding of the filmic product.

With particular focus on film festivals, this volume aims to explore the 
tensions between the national and transnational not only in film, but 
also in event. Eventisization of culture, or Eventkultur, as a broad 
trend in contemporary culture also includes cinema and festivals and 
alters audience experience, film marketing and distribution.

In terms of a national cinema, eventisization can alter audience 
perceptions and transnational encounters.

Topics in the book include, but are not limited to:

- Contemporary examples of transnational German film

- The representation of contemporary Germany in film

- International engagement with German film through film and event

- The commercialisation of cultural specifics in international cinematic 
markets.

- The ways in which German-language cinemas relate to other national 
cinema traditions and the transnational integration of cinematic 
representations in time and space events.

- The circulation of German film through festivals and streaming platforms

Contributions from filmmakers, cultural managers and other professionals 
in the field of film and cinema are welcome, as well as academic 
contributions from academics researching popular culture, film, and 
events in relation to Germany.

The book will be published as part of the book series ‘Global Germany in 
Transnational Dialogue’ and aims to collect contemporary, 
interdisciplinary research on current topic.
