The School of Communication and Culture invites applications for the 
position of professor of musicology, broadly conceived as music studies.

The appointment is tenured and begins on 1 February 2019 or as soon as 
possible thereafter.

The position is based at the Department of Dramaturgy and Musicology, 
which is part of the School of Communication and Culture.

The position
The professorship comprises research, teaching and supervision within 
the field of musicology, broadly conceived as music studies. The 
successful applicant will be expected to contribute to developing the 
profile of the department’s research and degree programmes and to 
strengthening them nationally and internationally.

Musicology at the Department of Dramaturgy and Musicology at Aarhus 
University employs 16 researchers, teachers and PhD students. Research 
and teaching relate to a broad field of historical and present, 
practical and theoretical, aesthetic and socio-cultural topics.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to and provide 
leadership in relation to tasks and responsibilities within Aarhus 
University’s core activities in the areas of research, teaching and 
supervision, talent development and knowledge exchange.

Research
The Department of Dramaturgy and Musicology at Aarhus University has a 
pronounced and significant international profile and a strong research 
network.

The successful applicant will be expected to take a leading role in 
developing the research programme in musicology. The successful 
applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in 
relation to both the field of musicology, broadly conceived as music 
studies, and the research community at the department in terms of new 
collaborative research projects with internal and external partners, as 
well as external research funding.

Applicants must therefore be able to document original academic 
production at the highest international level, as well as significant 
scholarly contributions to theoretical and thematic developments within 
the field. Applicants are furthermore asked to state how they see 
themselves and the department contributing to future developments within 
the field and to document a solid record of accomplishment in research 
leadership as well as in international research funding and 
international research cooperation.

Teaching
The successful applicant is expected to take part in and be committed to 
the department’s teaching activities, to participate in thematic and 
didactic development of the degree programmes and courses, and to teach 
and supervise students at all levels. In this connection, documented 
experience of the development and administration of degree programmes 
and a specification of teaching competencies within musicology is required.

Talent development
The successful applicant is expected to recruit and supervise PhD 
students, and must have experience of including and encouraging talented 
students.

Knowledge exchange
Applicants are expected to contribute to knowledge exchange as outlined 
in the strategy of the Faculty of Arts, for instance via research 
collaboration with external partners, public-sector institutions or 
private organisations. Applicants must be able to document previous 
experience of research communication and knowledge exchange.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a 
relevant field related to musicology. Applicants must be able to 
document, relevant to the position:

• a record of international academic, peer-reviewed research 
publications at the highest international level which have contributed 
to developments within the field, preferably but not exclusively in one 
or more of the following research areas:

    music aesthetics and aesthetic theory, for example the relation of 
aesthetic theory to issues of music analysis, historical musicology, 
musical mediation and music philosophy
    music performance and music as a performative phenomenon, for 
example the relation of performance and performativity to issues of 
musical liveness, mediation or mediatisation, the music industry and 
event culture, music theatre and opera, music analysis and historiography
    music didactics and pedagogy, for example the relation of music 
education to issues of learning, creativity and technology, 
socio-cultural differences and institutional contexts in musical life, 
issues of studying and improving on pedagogical practices, 
methodologically and theoretically
    gender, race and sexuality, for example the relation of music and 
musicology to gender studies, studies of race and queer theory along 
with issues of gender, race and sexuality in musical life, historically 
and at present
    music anthropology, for example developments of ethnomusicology or 
music anthropology in terms of theory and method in the study of changes 
in musical life, musico-cultural transformations or social processes; or 
studies relating music anthropology to other disciplinary subfields, 
such as music history, analysis, sociology, performance and production

• a successful record of accomplishment in research management and in 
attracting external research funding within the field;
• active participation in international research collaboration and 
academic networks;
  teaching, teaching development and supervision at all levels;
• the development and administration of degree programmes;
• talent development, supervision of research projects and development 
of research        programmes, for instance in the form of PhD courses;
• significant accomplishments within knowledge exchange.

If the successful applicant does not speak Danish, he or she will be 
required to acquire sufficient Danish within two years of commencing the 
appointment in order to participate fully in the activities of the 
School of Communication and Culture.

Participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, 
and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both 
among colleagues and with our students. In order to maintain and develop 
the department’s teaching and research environment, the successful 
applicant is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis, 
which will contribute to the School of Communication and Culture’s goal 
of establishing one of the best research environments in the Nordic 
countries.
