/Articles for Volume 12, Issue 1 (Jan-Jun 2019), on the topic of
Communication and Mobile Devices/
This issue of /Disertaciones /welcomes results of empirical academic
research relating to communication with mobile devices. Consumption of
informative and audiovisual content through smartphones and tablets has
increased continually since the beginning of this decade. Access to
journalistic content through mobile platforms has grown for five
straight years (Digital News Report, 2016) and with the expansion of
Wi-Fi networks and 4G technology, smart phones are increasingly used for
the consumption of videos, mini-documentaries, programs, web series,
etc., published on YouTube or shared over other platforms.
The broadcast model is undeniably in crisis as television stations lose
audience (Carlón; Scolari, 2009) and watchers prefer to view audiovisual
content on Netflix or Youtube. This does not mean that people will
longer gather together around media screens (television, computer, or
smart phone) to watch events of exceptional importance such as sports
championships or the speech of a new president. In this regard, Scolari
(2015) proposes “post-broadcast television” (though not without
broadcast television). One of the characteristics of this new era is the
appearance of hybrid practices that conflate elements of broadcasting
with non-broadcast networks. Content shared by any citizen can go viral
in a question of minutes over a connective and interactive network
(Castells, 2009).
Social media and the widespread use of apps (applications) are other
aspects of mobile communication subject to a great deal of research as
elements of the new media ecology (Strate, 1999, 2006; De Kerckhove,
1999), whose researchers build on the work of their predecessors in the
first wave of media ecology (McLuhan, 1964; Postman, 1970). In recent
years, scholars engaged in this area of research have demonstrated
special interest in multimedia and interactive narratives, offering
different analyses of transmedia convergence and of these narratives
(Jenkins, 2006).
The centrality of the fourth monitor in recent years testifies to a
social and cultural change that began with digitization, the development
of information technology, and the creation of the Web (Lévy, 1999), a
change that favors mobility, connectivity, and interactivity.
In Journalism studies, in particular, there has been research on content
production for tablets and iPads (Cunha, 2011; Belochio, 2012; Lima,
2012; Valentini, 2012; Barbosa, 2013), and there has been some analysis
of the evolution of journalistic expression on mobile platforms (Cebrián
y Flores, 2011; Canavilhas y Santana, 2011) and on the content demands
of mobile device users (Kormelink y Meijer, 2014).
/Disertaciones /hopes that this monographic issue will help deepen these
reflections, and invites the academic community to contribute with
empirical studies (quantitative, qualitative, or experimental) that
allow us to advance in our knowledge of research on mobile
communication. Contributions in the following areas are welcome:
1. The adoption and adaptation of mobile applications for content
production and distribution (photographs, videos, etc.). We hope to
receive research reports that relate communication or journalism with
apps like WhattsApp, Periscope, or Snapchat.
2. Usability and user experience with native journalistic products for
mobile devices.
3. Business models developed by communication companies specifically for
smartphone and tablet.
4. Immersive and interactive narratives for mobile devices created by
leading laboratories for innovative communication in different
countries, such as those focusing on multimedia and transmedia.
5. New advertising for users of the fourth monitor who want more
interactive content.
6. New entertainment industry products such as games, films, or
animations that explore interactive and immersive elements.
7. The architecture of informational content specifically oriented
toward the fourth monitor.
8. Apps for sending group or interpersonal messages, such as WhatsApp
and Telegram, that are widely used by social movements to organize
demonstrations, debate ideas, or disseminate content.
