The May / 2018 issue of Media & Journalism concerns the ethical and
deontological challenges of contemporary journalism. We intend to
contribute to the scientific debate about journalism ethical values and
practices in an evolving social, political and technological context.
New issues related with the diversity and inclusion media agenda are
part of a relevant critic about the role of journalism in democratic
societies. The difficulties of exercising journalism around the world,
whether by the globalization and complexity of political and social
problems or by the permanence of violence, constraints and manipulations
that affect the autonomy of journalists, make this debate a vital issue
for the survival of journalism and the democracy.
We are interest in contributions addressing the following questions:
Is ethics a valuable intellectual tool to resist to a post-truth era in
politics and the media?
Can the old journalistic ethics serve the new media and respond to the
transformation of journalistic practices and identity caused by the
erosion of traditional business models, the growth of digital platforms
and the expansion of journalistic narratives?
Do the ethical values that underlie most ethical codes - the search for
truth, independence and the minimization of evil - continue to guide the
choices of journalists facing an increasingly fluid, hybrid and
precarious professional context?
Should other values, such as transparency, or the notion of "community",
be added to strengthen the ideal of a journalism practice more
participated by the public and, to that extent, more polarized?
Should the management of journalists' digital footprint, such as the
professional use of social networks, be regulated? What kind of limits,
if any, can regulate the users participation in the digital environment,
such as online comment boxes and social media?
What are the most relevant regulatory experiences underway in media
companies worldwide, the main institutional frameworks and ongoing
debates taking place in the newsrooms or within journalistic organizations?
How to include the "new" professionals, who are increasingly part of a
professional culture deprived of spaces for value sharing?
The call is open to contributions that are based, from the theoretical
or empirical point of view, on the following themes:
- Dilemmas and ethical challenges of contemporary journalism;
- Journalistic ethics and new media;
- Journalistic ethics and professional identity;
- "Boundary work" practices and new phenomena in journalism: "brand
journalism"; Special projects; Paid content; Sponsored journalism;
- Debates around the institutional frameworks and regulatory bodies of
journalism;
- New actors in journalistic ethics: public, readers, and citizens;
- New articulations of values in old ethical and deontological codes;-
Journalistic ethics and the world around us: journalists'
precariousness, journalism in danger, sustainability of journalistic
companies;
- Fake news and “post-truth” as risks to the survival of journalism;
- Journalistic coverage of cases involving ethical issues: freedom of
expression, autonomy of journalists, respect for the dignity of human
life, defence of honour and privacy; relationship with sources of
information;
- Historical perspectives on journalistic values;
- Business independence and opacity of the shareholder structure,
sustainability of the business model; Precariousness of journalists and
ethical deviations;
- Other issues related to the number concerned.
The articles will be subject to blind peer review and should be sent,
with strict observance of the journal rules of submission, through the
OJS platform until September 15, 2017
