[ecrea] three postdocs at Tilburg U (NL): Understanding information for legal protection of people against information-induced harms

The Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society, Tilburg 
University, the Netherlands, invites applications for a 4,5 year postdoc 
position within an ERC project “Understanding information for legal 
protection of people against information-induced harms” (INFO-LEG) led 
by dr. Nadya Purtova (ERC Starting Grant 716971).

INFO-LEG aims to improve legal protection against harms of data 
processing, inter alia, based on the information studies insights on the 
nature of information, information processing technologies and 
practices. INFO-LEG will develop more appropriate information-related 
concept(s) to serve as a cornerstone of legal protection against 
information-induced harms.

The thesis underlying the project is that the concept of personal data 
will in a short run cover all data, and hence is no longer an 
appropriate cornerstone for a system of legal protection. A system of 
legal protection based on such a concept will be impossible to comply 
with and to enforce. Therefore the project will look for alternative 
information-related concepts to serve as a trigger of legal protection. 
Among others, this will be done by conceptualising information and 
personal data from an economic perspective, as an economic good, and in 
the context of data markets. This track of the project will be pursued 
by an economics postdoc.

There will be also a parallel track for an ‘information studies’ postdoc 
who will look for alternative concepts in information theory and via 
information-studies analysis of the actual practices how data is 
generated, processed, attributed meaning and used. Both positions are 
for 4,5 years and have very attractive employment conditions.
