CFP 'From media to mediations: rethinking mass media communication in Spain after Franco's regime'

As part of the International Conference ‘La España Actual: Cuarenta años de historia (1976-2016)” -“Present-day Spain: Forty years of history (1976-2016)”-organized by AHA and AHP, the Seminario de Historia y Teoría de la Cultura - Seminar of History and Theory of Culture- is organising a panel entitled“From media to mediations: rethinking mass media communication in Spain after Franco’s regime”. The International Conference will take place at Universidad de Cádiz (Spain) on May 10-12, 2017.

The proposed panel seeks to arise questions about the presence and use of mass media in Spain after Franco’s death. The new democratic rights and liberties allowed the re-configuration of both the structure and the social uses of media. Therefore, we wish to develop an analytical approach stressing the relationship between these tools of information and communication in order to understand the roles they play in the Spanish society, e.g. as elements assembling the social fabric, as carriers of diverse discourses, and as loudspeakers for cultural expressions. This way, we wish to gain insight of the cultural models and practices that emerge in the process of creation, transmission and reception, through a theoretical and critical effort focused on the media’s associated products.

Accordingly, submissions dealing with mass media in Spain during the period of 1976-2016 are welcomed. However, the panel’s coordination is especially interested in the following topics:

  *

A diachronic history of mass media in Spain while avoiding to fall
    in traditional institutional history.

  *

Thematic research in a certain type of mass media (video games,
    television, radio, film…).

  *

    Comparative studies between different mediums.

  *

Transnational approaches to mass media, comparative studies between
    Spain and other countries.

  *

Interdisciplinary studies that aim to address the history of mass
media through particular analytical lenses: gender history, women's
    history, history of emotions, etc.

The deadline for abstract submissions is January 15, 2017, while full papers have to be submitted before April 15, 2017. The language of the communications has to be Spanish or English. Submissions have to be submitted to the following emails:
