FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY Leicester Media School
Reader / Professor of Media Discourse Full Time, Permanent
Grade H: Salary Range for Reader £47,801 - £55,389 per annum
Salary for Professor: To be determined by the Vice Chancellor
The Leicester Media School in the Faculty of Technology, De Montfort
University, wishes to appoint an experienced academic in order to
support its plans for the next Research Excellence Framework, help
mentor early career staff, support and expand its large postgraduate and
PhD base, and contribute to undergraduate teaching. Based within the
Media Discourse Group (an interdisciplinary body that draws its research
staff from a number of fields, including Media Production, Journalism,
and Media and Communication), the successful candidate will produce high
quality outputs (building and expanding on the success of the 2014 REF),
while enhancing research impact and the quality of grant applications.
In accordance with the University's commitment to diversity - and the
Internationalisation of the curriculum and research environment - the
Media Discourse Group has in recent years enhanced its UK PhD cohort by
recruiting doctoral candidates from China, the Lebanon, Nigeria, Iraq,
Kuwait, and Brazil. In order to consolidate this development,
applications are invited from academics who are familiar with, and able
to contribute to fields such as: Gender and Identity; Global Dissent and
Protest Movements; Media Production; Political Discourse; Transgressive
Cultures; Ethnography; Social Media Practice and Theory; Cultural
Sociology; Broadcast and Press Journalism; and Investigative Journalism
(which is also offered as an MA run in partnership with Channel Four). A
willingness to support the growth of scholarly activity within
Disability Studies and/or Social Movement Studies would also be welcome,
and it is hoped that the successful candidate will strengthen our ties
with the Centre for Urban Research on Austerity, and LGBT research
groups operating within the University.
The role includes the production of internationally recognised and
world-leading research, supporting our Media and Communication Unit of
Assessment which, in REF 2014, produced the highest quality outputs in
the country. The post holder will also play an active part in developing
capacity and capability for external income generation.
1. produce high quality research outputs
2. help supervise current PhDs and help recruit future doctoral candidates
3. develop and enhance links to other research groups in the University and
with other HEIs in order to develop research bids and secure research funds
4. reinforce our International reputation for research and enhance our
International recruitment
5. help develop research staff who operate across a broad range of
disciplines, including Media Production and Journalism
In addition, the appointee may make a contribution to selected
undergraduate teaching depending on his/her specialisms (see above),
which may include work in Media Production, Journalism, Media and
Communication, and Communication Arts, with a particular remit to
develop an International perspective within these disciplines. This
will, in turn, help to support the University's programme of global
engagement, which is underpinned by its ground-breaking 'DMU Global'
initiative. Experience of mentoring staff, writing funding bids, and
supervising PhD students in both practice-based and traditional academic
disciplines will be an advantage.
