Euroscepticism and the Media
The most recent European Parliament elections resulted in a substantial
rise in support for several parties with a political agenda critical of
EU and the integration process. This phenomenon occurred in some but
not all - Member States, and the degrees and kinds of these Eurosceptic
voices varied across national borders. In reporting about these
elections, and Euroscepticism more generally, the media plays an active
part in the construction, framing, and dissemination of Eurosceptic
narratives. Scholarly literature has acknowledged the fact that the
media play a significant role in how Euroscepticism is perceived by
European publics, but the more precise mechanisms at play behind this
influence have not been entirely elucidated.
A number of factors have been found to be significant in the general
reporting of politics by traditional media, such as: media strategy
(tabloid versus quality press), media ownership (ideological bias), and
political communication culture (the normative ways journalists interact
with politicians and their audiences). However, the application of
existing theories to new media outlets (e.g. blogs, social media, and
online news aggregators) is still in an incipient phase. As opposed to
traditional media, where citizens are passive consumers of information,
the digital architectures of new media platforms encourage citizens to
be active producers and distributers of media content. Moreover, online
public spheres are less bound by national borders, thus weakening the
connection between national media cultures and online reporting and
debates.
The present panel wants to examine in which way the general theories
about media and politics apply specifically to the case of
Euroscepticism. We welcome papers addressing these or related questions,
in either single case or comparative studies format:
- How do comparable media channels conceptualize Euroscepticism in
different national environments? How is Europe represented?
- How do traditional and new media compare in regards to the treatment
of Eurosceptic ideas and actors?
- Which factors influence variations in the Eurosceptic narrative, in
different national contexts and across different types of media outlets?
- What is the role of media logic, with its tendency towards the
depoliticization and spectacularization of politics, in the reporting
and discussion of Euroscepticism?
