[ecrea] Television studies scholars: Podcasts of research presentations

Tue Sep 10 20:33:16 GMT 2013

I wanted to remind everyone that high-quality video podcasts are available of the research presentations at the television-studies research symposium that took place here at the University of Georgia last April.

The symposium's purpose was to assess the state of the art in television studies while also recognizing the formative contributions to the field by Dr. Horace Newcomb, who retired in 2013 after a 42-year internationally recognized career in television studies.

You may find them useful for teaching or perhaps to spur your own thinking.

The presentations that are available:

--Amanda Lotz (University of Michigan), "The Cumulative Narrative of the Cumulative Narrative of Television Studies"

--James Hay (University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana), "Revisiting the Contradictions of the Birth of Television Studies--and Why That is Worth Doing Now"

--David Thorburn (MIT), "Unstable Platforms: Television in the Digital Age"

--Alisa Perren (then of Georgia State University), "Producer's Medium to Producer's Media: The Showrunner's Shifting Authority in the Convergent Era"

--Tom Schatz (University of Texas at Austin), "Never the Twain Shall Meet: Film Studies, Television Studies, and the Nagging Issue of Authorship"

--Jeff Jones (University of Georgia), "Politics and/of the Cultural Forum"

--Dr. Horace Newcomb (University of Georgia), Response
