It is with great pleasure that we announce the international conference 
“Locating Imagination: Media, Tourism, Rituals” , which will take place 
on the 17th and 18th of October 2013. The theme of this conference is 
media tourism, the phenomenon of people travelling to places they 
associate with specific films, novels, songs or other media products. In 
addition, research will be presented on the related themes of media 
rituals and dark tourism. The conference is hosted by the Netherlands 
Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Erasmus Research Centre 
for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) of the Erasmus University 
Rotterdam and the Research school for Media Studies (RMeS). The lectures 
and discussions will take place at Hotel New York, Rotterdam, The 
Netherlands.

Through this writing, we would like to invite interested scholars and 
students to join our inspiring keynotes delivered by Matt Hills on fan 
pilgrimages , Sue Beeton on the state-of-the-art in film tourism 
research, and Nicola Watson on the history of literary tourism. In 
addition, five PhD students will present their latest research results. 
Their work will be critically reviewed by Johanna Sumiala, Susanne 
Janssen, Hilde van den Bulck and Anne Marit Waade who will spark the 
discussion. Below you can find a short introduction on each of the 
aforementioned scholars.


The program is as followed:

DAY 1 – Thursday 17th of October
The afternoon-sessions will start at 13:00 in the Tushinski I room at 
Hotel New York and will consist out of two keynotes and three 
presentations on recently conducted research in the field of media 
tourism. These presentations will take about 30 minutes,  followed by a 
15 minute public discussion. After these sessions you are welcome to 
join us for a social drink-or-two!

Introductions

DR. MATT HILLS is Professor of Film and Television Studies and Leader of 
the Film & Television Research Group at Aberystwyth University in Wales. 
He is the author of, among others, Fan Cultures (2002), The Pleasures of 
Horror (2005), and Triumph of a Time Lord: Regenerating Doctor Who in 
the 21st Century (2010), and is recognized as one of the leading 
scholars on cult media texts, fans, and their relations.

DR. SUE BEETON is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Business, 
Economics, and Law at La Trobe Business School in Melbourne, Australia. 
She is one of the leading researchers in the field of film-related 
tourism, having written the book Film-Induced Tourism (2005), published 
articles, and edited journals on the topic. Additionally, she has 
published on a range of other tourism-related issues, such as rural 
tourism and tourism and community development.

DR. NICOLA WATSON is a Professor in the English Department at the Open 
University in the United Kingdom. Her focus is on the romantic period in 
English literature, with a particular focus on transformation and 
adaptation of literary texts. She is the author of, among other books, 
The Literary Tourist: Readers & Places in Romantic and Victorian Britain 
(2006) and is currently expanding that research to literary tourism in 
the USA.

DR. JOHANNA SUMIALA is Assistant Professor and Kone Foundation Senior 
Fellow at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, University of 
Helsinki, Finland. With a research interest and expertise in the fields 
of media anthropology, media and religion, visual culture and media 
history, she has participated in several international comparative 
projects  including the current research titled Youth Street Politics in 
the Media Age. She has recently published articles on mediatized  
violence and ritualized (online) communication, and she is the author of 
the book Media and Ritual: Death, Community and Everyday Life published 
by London Routledge in 2012.

DR. SUSANNE JANSSEN is Professor of Sociology of Media and Culture at 
Erasmus University Rotterdam. Her research activities lie in the fields 
of cultural sociology, media and communications research, and the 
sociology of the arts and literature. In 2003, she received the 
prestigious VICI grant for the research project Cultural Classification 
Systems in Transition, a large-scale, longitudinal and cross-national 
study into the social valuation of cultural products in France, Germany, 
the Netherlands and the United States. Since September 2010, she serves 
as director of an international collaborative research project on 
Popular Music Heritage, Cultural Memory and Cultural Identity (POPID).

DR. HILDE VAN DEN BUCLK is Professor of Communication Studies and head 
of the Research Group Media, Policy and Culture at the University of 
Antwerp in Belgium. Hilde has complementary expertise in media 
structures and processes, and in media culture. In the first area she is 
specialized in broadcast structures, political economy and policies. In 
the latter area she is specialized in the role of media and celebrities 
in culture and society in general, and in collective identities in 
particular. In these areas she obtained several research grants and has 
published in ranked, academic journals as well as in books.

DR. ANNE MARIT WAADE is Associate Professor at the Department of 
Information and Media Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark. Her 
research falls within the areas of media aesthetics, visual culture, 
mediated tourism and branding culture. She has recently published 
articles on crime fiction series, crime tourism and travel series, she 
has co-published the book Medier og turisme/Media and Tourism with Jakob 
Linaa Jensen (2009), and co-edited two books, Re-Investing Authenticity 
(2010) and Den Skandinaviske krimi: Bestseller og blockbuster. Her book 
Wallanderland will be published in 2012.
