Position Overview

Applications are invited for a full-time, ongoing Lectureship or Senior Lectureship (US equivalent Assistant/Associate Professor) in the Media Studies programme of the School of English and Media Studies at Massey University. The position is based at the Manawatu campus of Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand.

The Media Studies undergraduate programme at Massey currently includes courses in film, television, popular culture, advertising, trauma and the media, visual culture, digital and global media, stardom and celebrity, independent media, media technologies, gender and race, and media screen arts. The graduate programme focuses on media theory and research methods, and offers a selection of courses in the above areas.

The programme teaches courses in internal and distance learning modes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. There is increasing emphasis at the University on online delivery, particularly for distance teaching.

Applicants are expected to have a sound background in Media Studies or a related discipline, to be able to teach introductory and other undergraduate courses, and to provide graduate courses and supervision of student research up to PhD level.

The successful applicant will have a PhD either completed or very near to completion at the time of application. Experience of University-level teaching and academic publication or other evidence of ongoing research activity will be expected.

This position is open as to areas of specialisation.

To maintain a high-quality programme of research, develop and deliver high-quality teaching and supervision to students, and engage fully in service activities within the School, College and University.

Key accountabilities

Teaching/Supervision

1. Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as required.
2. Develop and maintain areas of curriculum appropriate to local needs and consistent with international standards.
3. Coordinate and administer papers effectively.
4. Supervise the research activities of undergraduate and postgraduate students (including doctoral candidates) as required.
5. Undertake continuing professional development.


Research

1. Undertake an active, appropriate and viable personal research programme or participate in team-based research.
2. Publish papers in academic journals and/or larger scholarly work.
3. Present research and act as a discussant at academic conferences.
4. Generate research funding.
5. Maintain a personal PBRF (Performance Based Research Fund) Evidence Portfolio.

Service to the Community

1. Participate in community service activities that further advance the profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s Charter and Strategic Plan. 2. Assist the School to develop an environment which gives effect to the obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi.

School, College and University Responsibilities

1. Serve on University, College and/or School committees.
2. Ensure the observance of University policy and codes of practice in all teaching, research, community service and administrative practices. 3. Contribute to the development of a School working environment of teamwork and cooperation.

PhD (or soon to be completed PhD) in a relevant field.
