FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES
Commentary and Criticism Call for Papers
We invite contributions for the Commentary and Criticism section of
Feminist Media Studies
"Girls"
Since its debut on HBO, in April 2012, "Girls" has been one of the most
controversial mediated representations of young women in recent times.
>From its discussion of relationships to money to STDs, "Girls"
vacillates between being highly original and vacuously self-absorbed.
Critics fall between these two extremes, hailing it as 'excruciatingly
funny' and 'real' to panning it for its focus on young, wealthy, white
women. Whether fan or foe, the show has generated much discussion, and
for this issue of Commentary and Criticism, we are interested in short
essays that respond and discuss these various controversies raised by
"Girls," through a feminist media studies framework.
Essays of 1500-2000 words are due by Monday, 10 September and should be
emailed to Kumi Silva at (kumi /at/ email.unc.edu) and Kaitlynn Mendes at
(kmendes /at/ dmu.ac.uk)
