[ecrea] The ethics of literary journalism – Call for Papers

Sun Jul 08 18:37:01 GMT 2012

Please find here a Call for Papers, for a special issue of Journalism: Theory, Practice and Criticism, which takes as its focus the ethics of literary journalism. Apologies for any cross-posting.

In each generation, writers and critics find ways to value the potential of long-form narrative nonfiction to offer readers an insight and artistry that is commonly assumed to be the preserve of fiction. In more recent times, memoir and confessional writing and their social networking equivalents have also gained currency, mixing with journalistic forms and borrowing from them. While literary journalism has gained prominence as a distinct genre, however, the ethical issues arising from this specific encounter – between the disciplines of objectivity as a form of verifiable truth, and the subjectivity of personal experience – have become more urgent. This special issue on literary journalism will explore a range of critical and practice-led approaches to an evolving genre, focusing on areas of ethical tension. Prospective authors should submit an abstract of approximately 250 words by email to Susan Greenberg and Julie Wheelwright ((julie.wheelwright.1 /at/ city.ac.uk)). Deadline for abstracts: 1 December 2012
