A Research Associate is required to support Professors Stephen Hutchings
and Vera Tolz who, with colleagues from Leeds and Loughborough
Universities and The Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham
House, are beginning a major 3-year, AHRC-funded project
‘(Mis)Translating Deceit after the Cold War: Disinformation as a
Translingual, Discursive Dynamic.’
The Manchester Research Associate will support Hutchings and Tolz
(Manchester) and Dr Neil Sadler (Leeds) with the creation of large
datasets of print and digital sources, and discourse, historical and
political analysis of these sources. The Research Associate will
(co-)author articles and other publications. In the second year, the
PDRA will also work alongside a second Research Associate based at
Loughborough University in gathering other research sources and will
assist colleagues at Chatham House with producing reports for our
non-academic partners.
Available from 1 October 2023, or as soon thereafter as possible, the
post is for 2 years full time. The PDRA should have completed a PhD in
Media Studies, Russian and East European Area Studies, Politics,
International Relations, or History of the Cold War/Contemporary
International History. We will also consider applicants with PhDs in
Translation Studies, particularly those with experience of analysing
corpus data, and in other relevant fields. Native or near native command
of English and an excellent knowledge of the Russian language are
required. The ability to work with sources in one or more of the
following -- Arabic, Chinese, German and Spanish -- will be an
advantage. Knowledge of other languages may also be considered. A
familiarity with web network location and visualization software and web
corpus curation tools is desirable, but not essential (relevant training
will be offered, if necessary).
