We invite applications for the post of Research Associate and Senior
Research Associate in Sociology/Communications Studies.
Newcastle University and Durham University seek to appoint researchers
for the EPSRC funded project ‘AGENCY: Assuring Citizen Agency in a World
with Complex Online Harms’. We invite applications of candidates to
become part of an exciting, multidisciplinary research project
incorporating scholars from Computing (including AI, HCI and Cyber
Security), Sociology, Ethics, Business and Law. The research aims to
protect citizens and society from online harms such as hate speech,
misinformation, issues around self-image, and domestic violence during a
pandemic. AGENCY researches how to provide end-users with control
(‘agency’) over their online experiences. The team will design new
citizen-centred technologies, influence policy and contribute to new
ethical frameworks. Please visit https://agencyresearch.net/ for more
information on available posts.
This post considers the foundational social, psychological, scientific
and ethical dimensions of online agency. The ideal candidate for this
role is a capable researcher with expert knowledge of the
cross-disciplinary understandings of complex online harms to individuals
and society, for instance caused by use and abuse of social media. The
ability to engage with other disciplines as part of an interdisciplinary
research team is essential for this interdisciplinary project.
We invite applications from researchers with expertise in a range of
different subject areas such as science and technology studies including
digital affordances and constraints; privacy and data protection;
internet and/or cybersecurity studies; design and AI; regulation,
governance and ethics. You have a PhD in Sociology or Communication
Studies or related disciplines, particularly with an understanding of
research relevant to new technologies, society and citizens' online
practices are considered essential for this position.
You will work with Prof Deborah Chambers in Newcastle School of Arts
(media and communication studies). This post is funded until March 31,
2025 on a full-time basis. Informal inquiries for this post can be made
to Deborah Chambers (deborah.chambers /at/ newcastle.ac.uk). As member of the
AGENCY project team, the post will be based in AGENCY’s dedicated
interdisciplinary work space in the multi-award winning Urban Sciences
Building, a ‘living laboratory’ and an exemplar of sustainable urban
development in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
(https://newcastlehelix.com/).
