The Search

Drexel University seeks an experienced, innovative, and strategic leader to serve as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CoAS). Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean will provide visionary leadership to propel CoAS forward and will have responsibility for personnel, general administration and management, budget, academic and development functions. This is an exceptional opportunity for a creative and collaborative leader to articulate a vision for the College, while building on Drexel’s position as one of the nation’s leading private, comprehensive, research universities with a historical commitment to impactful teaching, research, and technological leadership.

Drexel’s historical foundation as an institution committed to solving problems in science, industry, business, and the arts, as well as its more recent expansion into fields such as medicine, public health, and law, has established the University as a global leader in research, technology, and experiential learning. Located in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Drexel employs over 2,400 faculty members and has a total enrollment of approximately 24,000 students. The quality of the student experience is a central value, as is its commitment to incorporating job experience into university education via its unique cooperative education program. Since its founding, Drexel has been committed to preparing its students for a rapidly changing workforce. Drexel is designated as an R1 Doctoral University in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education (one of only 39 private universities to earn the distinction.). Drexel is consistently ranked among the top 100 national research universities in the United States by notable publications such as U.S. News and World Report, the Wall Street Journal, and Times Higher Education US College Rankings.

The College of Arts and Sciences is foundational to the entire University community with departments and programs that involve students from all colleges and schools. Through comprehensive, real-world approach to education, CoAS empowers its graduates to respond to the world’s most pressing issues, underscoring the importance and value of the liberal arts and sciences. CoAS delivers a time-honoured liberal arts education paired with Drexel’s renowned focus on applied learning, with research and scholarship that explores contemporary issues with an eye toward improving the common good. CoAS faculty are recognized experts who drive discovery and collaboration across diverse disciplines in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The College is home to approximately 290 full-time faculty, 2,140 undergraduates and 370 graduate students who study across 13 academic departments. The Dean will be expected to foster partnerships within CoAS, with other colleges and schools across the Drexel community, and externally in the surrounding greater Philadelphia area and beyond.
