Description

The Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology (ICCIT) at the University of Toronto Mississauga invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment in the area of Mediated Communication at the rank of Associate Professor. The position start date is July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

Candidates must have a PhD in communication, sociology, computational social science, network science, information science, or a related area. Candidates must have a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching. They must demonstrate an excellent research program emphasizing the application of quantitative methods, big data analytics, network analysis, or mixed methods with a strong quantitative component, to study the role of technologically mediated communication in society; We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our Institute’s existing strengths. Candidates will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

The successful candidate will have experience researching and teaching mediated communication studies, quantitative research methodologies, sociology, information studies, and emerging media. Successful candidates must have an active and excellent program of research that uses quantitative methods, big data analysis, or mixed methods with a strong quantitative component, to study the implications of technologically mediated communication for broad social and structural phenomenon, such as but not limited to the restructuring of work and home life, transnational networks, precarious labour and the gig economy, political engagement, and health, consumer culture, communication and exchange networks, or social movements.

Candidates must have an emerging reputation in a social science-related field and will demonstrate research excellence through the submitted research statement; the demonstrated ability to attract research funding; record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant scholarly journals, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing. Other evidence of research excellence such as presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, will also be considered.

Excellence in teaching can be demonstrated by the teaching dossier outlining experience and accomplishments. The dossier must include a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, and teaching evaluations.

The successful candidate will have a graduate appointment in one of the University of Toronto's tri-campus graduate departments such as the Department of Sociology.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

ICCIT focuses on teaching and research excellence in its three undergraduate programs: Communication, Culture, Information and Technology, Digital Enterprise Management and Professional Writing and Communication. ICCIT is building a research complement in the theory and practice of communication, interactive and immersive digital media and culture, new media design, and management in/of technology organizations.
