Professor/Associate Professor in Interdisciplinary Methodologies and Methods

The position

One position as Associate professor/professor in Interdisciplinary Methodologies and Methods at the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education: Centre for Peace Studies (CPS), Centre for women’s and gender research (SKK), and Centre for Sami Studies (SESAM). The main focus of the position is social science methodologies and, predominantly qualitative, methods, that apply to multi- and interdisciplinary research and post-graduate studies on gender, indigenous, and peace and conflict.


Affiliation

Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education (HSL) has seven departments and four centres. The one position will serve the following three units at the faculty:

The Centre for Peace Studies (CPS) is concerned with interdisciplinary and novel theoretical and empirical understandings of peace and conflict dynamics. Currently, the Centre has altogether eight faculty members of various affiliations, including the director, and three administrative staff members. CPS is involved in various research projects as well as a number of institutional partnerships. Furthermore, CPS frequently engages in outreach activities in collaboration with relevant institutions and civil society organizations. The English-taught and interdisciplinary two-year Master’s programme in Peace and Conflict Transformation (MPCT) was launched in 2002. MPCT recruits students from all over the world, fostering cross-cultural competencies. Every fall semester, the programme admits up to 29 students.

The Centre for Women’s and Gender Research (SKK) is a designated unit for evocation and strengthening of multidisciplinary gender research and gender perspectives at the University. While located within the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, SKK works with all units at UiT. Promoting gender awareness and gender perspectives in all disciplines, SKK develops and offers seminars and courses at all levels in collaboration with various departments across faculties at the University; PhD courses as part of the Norwegian research school in Gender Research; and a one year course in gender and gender equality. Currently, the Centre has eight faculty members of various affiliations, including the director.

The aim of Centre for Sami Studies (SESAM) is to strengthen multidisciplinary research in Sami and indigenous issues at the University. Furthermore, the Centre’s activities shall contribute to the strengthening of Sami languages in an academic context as well as to the development of collaboration with Sami educational and research institutions. The Centre also assists the leadership of the University and the faculty in Sami and indigenous issues. SESAM is responsible for two international master programmes: a two-year full-time Master’s Programme in Indigenous Studies (MIS) and the joint Master’s programme Governance and Entrepreneurship in Northern and Indigenous Areas (GENI) with a three years duration, and flexible, partly online study. Currently, the Centre has altogether ten faculty members of various affiliations, including the director, and four administrative staff members.


The position’s work areas and field of research

The successful candidate will be affiliated with, and shall serve all three units; in research, supervision and teaching.

In terms of teaching, the candidate is expected to have a special responsibility for interdisciplinary methods and methodologies. The teaching must take into account the different points of departure of a body of international students with a wide variety of cultural and, more specifically, academic backgrounds regarding knowledge in methods of social sciences. The teaching should therefore provide analytical tools for handling different methods and methodological approaches.

Furthermore, the candidate is expected to engage in and propose research projects that may bridge the agendas of the units. Research on practical use of qualitative as well as mixed methods and comparative research, and methodological reflections on topics of gender research i.e. intersectionality (class, age, ethnicity etc.) and post-colonial perspectives, peace and conflict dynamics, ethics, power dimensions, indigenous methodologies (e.g. culturally responsive and participatory research) and decolonization, are areas of interest.

Qualification requirements

Norwegian doctoral degree in a relevant subject area of social sciences or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in a relevant subject area of social sciences. Competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality. Relevant work experience and documented teaching and supervision competence – preferably from international programs. Genuine interest in working with students at all levels. Formal and solid competence within the field of social science methods and methodologies, and with interdisciplinary oriented theoretical and (qualitative) methodological approaches. A good scientific publication record through (preferably international) peer-reviewed publication channels. Proficiency in English. The applicants must be fully proficient in English, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Norwegian is also required, but the successful candidate may be appointed in proviso of the acquisition of this qualification within a period of three years.



Furthermore, the assessment of applicants will value:

    Experience with digital teaching and research methods
Prior engagement and competence in quality research through the formulation of relevant research questions, as well as through engagement in interdisciplinary oriented theoretical and methodological approaches.

The evaluation committee may also consider other decisive factors in their ranking of candidates, like the scientific quality and research competence as evident in the submitted works, and experience from international cooperation, dissemination, popularization and contribution to previous successful project funding.

CPS/SKK/SESAM are looking for candidates with great academic potential who are academically progressive and interdisciplinary oriented. The successful candidate should be theoretically strong and methodologically skilled, preferably in qualitative but also in mixed methods. Most importantly, the applicant must be interdisciplinary oriented and academically flexible in terms of both research and teaching. Furthermore, the successful candidate must be someone who sincerely engages with Master’s and Doctoral students through lectures, seminars and supervision, and who is interested in contributing to the development of CPS/Kvinnforsk/Sesam as academic entities and as inspiring workplaces.

The position is shared among three different units. Good teamwork skills will be an important asset. The evaluation committee will assess the candidates’ overall skills as well as personal suitability.

It is expected that the successful candidate will participate in research group collaboration and professional networks nationally and internationally, as well as in disseminating research to a wider public. It is expected that the successful candidate/position holder is willing to develop grant applications (RCN/EU).

Other requirements:

The appointed Associate Professor/Professor must have her/his daily workplace at the UiT Campus Tromsø.

You must be fluent in English, and should have a good command of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language. If relevant: you must be willing to learn Norwegian within minimum two years.



Qualification requirements for the position as Professor:

Academic level conforming to established international or national standards for position of Professor in the subject area concerned
    Documented teaching competence

To be awarded a professorship, you must document substantially more extensive research of high quality than that required to be awarded a doctorate degree. You must document academic activity at a high level over the previous six years, and that this points forwards towards continued activity at professorial level.

When national standards for assessment have been drawn up by the National Conference of Faculties: In addition UiT assess applicants according to national guidelines for assessment of professorial competence, decided by the National Faculty Meeting of (subject area). Qualification requirements for the position as Associate Professor:

Norwegian doctoral degree in subject area concerned or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree
    Documented teaching competence

At UiT we put emphasis on the quality, relevance and significance of the research work and not on where the work is published, in accordance with the principles of The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).


Teaching qualifications

You must have acquired basic skills in planning, conducting, evaluating and developing teaching and guidance. All applicants must document their teaching competence:

Applicants who have completed education or courses designed to provide teaching competence for teaching at universities and colleges, equivalent to a minimum of 200 hours, must attach diploma and curriculum for the completed course. Other applicants shall describe, assess and document their competence as a teacher and supervisor. Practice as a teacher and supervisor in higher education is required, often combined with relevant courses and seminars. The skills must be documented in the form of a teaching portfolio. Experience with teaching and supervision in higher education corresponding to two years in a full-time position of is required. For dosent and professor positions, experience with teaching and supervision in higher education corresponding to three years in a full-time position of is required.



For professor positions UiT also require:

    Quality development in own teaching and guidance over time
Extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level Participation in the development of educational quality in professional communities



Applicants for professor positions must document that the additional criteria are met through:

Description and reflection on your work with developing teaching and supervision. This should be documented with examples that show development over time, as well as a justification for and reflection on process and results. Description of experience with supervision at the master's and doctoral level. In addition to describing the scope of the guidance, you should also summarize the guidance experience and point out possible development areas Description of and reflection on your own leadership, participation and role in the development of teaching quality in your academic community



For professor positions, the teaching competence can be developed and documented through a combination of courses and teaching portfolio.

If the teaching competence can be acquired within two years after employment, applicants will be assessed, but not ranked, based on teaching competence. Those who do not meet the requirements at the time of appointment will be required to meet the requirements within two years. UiT offers courses in educational competence to employees. For a position as professor, the additional requirements for a professorial teaching competence must be met, but can be appointed with the same reservations as mentioned when it comes to documented basic competence.
Interim appointment

If there are no fully qualified applicants for the position, an interim appointment to qualify scientifically and/or in consideration of teaching qualifications, may be made for a period of three years. Application for permanent employment with a new assessment shall be applied for within the three year-period. The appointment will become permanent if you are found to be suitably qualified before the three-year period elapses.

General

The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In general, professors (and dosent)/associate professors will spend an equal amount of time on teaching and research and development work, førstelektor (associate professor) will spend up to 50 % of their time on research and 50 % for teaching. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.

The successful candidate must be willing to get involved in the ongoing development of their department and the university as a whole.

The remuneration for Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1013. The remuneration for Associate Professor is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1011. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
