Professor in Media Technology

Ref AP-2018/123

Södertörn University is investing in the field of media and is advertising three professorships: in journalism; media technology; and media and communication studies. In a time of rapid technological change, the role of media in society is changing both its form and its content. Media research in the borderlands between technology, society and culture is becoming increasingly important for our critical understanding of the information society. The three professors will lead and develop multidisciplinary research into this new media landscape, with special responsibility for research related to the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. This is done in each subject, through cooperation with the surrounding community and in various multidisciplinary contexts.

Media Technology is an interdisciplinary technological subject at the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies. The subject has been offered at Södertörn University since 2001, and has a broad focus on the design, construction and analysis of digital media. Media Technology is the second-largest subject at the university and is a dynamic and creative environment for research and education. Research in the subject is multidisciplinary, where the exploration of technology and design is combined with perspectives from the social sciences and humanities. Media technology offers two degree programmes, as well as freestanding courses at Bachelor’s level and a two-year international Master’s degree.

Job description
The new professor in Media Technology will further develop research in the subject, with a particular focus on the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe. The professor will contribute to a strong and multidisciplinary research environment at Södertörn University by cooperating with other subjects at the university. Tasks include research, research leadership, administration and teaching. The position includes 60 per cent of full-time that is allocated to research and subject development, including tasks such as organising and leading higher seminars and applying for external research funding in cooperation with other researchers. The professor is expected to work actively for cooperation across subject boundaries and with the surrounding community. The position requires a high degree of presence and participation in collegial work.

Qualifications
To qualify for employment as a professor, the applicant must have demonstrated educational and scholarly expertise in the subject of Media Technology or the equivalent. Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or the equivalent, is advantageous. For this position, the applicant must be able to teach in English. Please refer to item 2.1.1 in Södertörn University’s Appointments Procedure, available at https://www.sh.se/english/sodertorn-university/meet-sodertorn-university/this-is-sodertorn-university/vacant-positions.

Grounds for assessment
Educational and scholarly expertise relevant to the position and the required qualifications is demonstrated through autonomous research that considerably exceeds that necessary for employment as an associate professor, both qualitatively and quantitatively. (See Södertörn University’s guidelines for associate professorships at https://www.sh.se/english/sodertorn-university/meet-sodertorn-university/this-is-sodertorn-university/vacant-positions). The applicant must have demonstrated good ability in building, leading and developing high quality research and must have experience of supervising doctoral students. The applicant must also have demonstrated good skills in communicating knowledge of research results. Other contributions to scholarly work other than their own research are also of merit, e.g. commissions as faculty examiner or external expert.

Educational expertise is assessed on the basis of the ability to develop, lead and conduct high quality education at different levels, educational development work and participation in linking research to education at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. Educational expertise also includes a commitment to education and a well-developed educational approach that is presented in writing, as well as formal training in teaching and learning in higher education or the equivalent competence. The applicant must also have the personal skills necessary to meet the demands of the position and to be able to represent the university in a way that benefits its activities.

In addition to the above grounds for assessment, the following secondary grounds for assessment have been established (in order of importance): All grounds for assessment must be documented:
