EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION: 16 September 2016

APPOINTMENT: 1.0 FTE, 9-month, tenure track

POSITION: The School of Arts and Communication (SAC) invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Visualization in the New Media Communications
(NMC) program.  NMC is seeking a candidate capable of developing an
undergraduate concentration in Visualization. Responsibilities include the design
and teaching of new classes in visualization as well as broader programmatic
development. The candidate is also expected to continue their research and/or creative activities within Visualization. Areas of interest within Visualization include scientific or data visualization, new visualization technologies or approaches, and
interactive media.

The position is a 1.0 FTE, 9-month appointment.  Salary and benefits are
competitive. The tenure line will be in the School of Arts and Communication with a
home in New Media Communications.

New Media Communications focuses on historical patterns and current trends and future developments in media, the fundamentals of content creation, technological
skills, knowledge of media and society, and media business acumen to produce
tomorrow's media leaders. The NMC program offers BS, BA, and BFA degrees in
Digital Communication Arts. All students explore media technology, media law and policy, and the social impact of media. Students commonly take courses from other
units of the School, particularly Speech Communication and Art.  NMC also
provides students a foundation in production practices for good storytelling in an
age of changing digital technologies.

The School of Arts and Communication includes programs in Art, Music, New Media Communications, Speech Communication, and Theatre. SAC is one of six schools in OSUs College of Liberal Arts. Founded in 1868, Oregon State is the states Land Grant university and is one of only two universities in the U.S. to have Sea Grant, Space Grant and Sun Grant designations. Oregon State is also the only university in Oregon to hold both the Carnegie Foundation's top designation for research
institutions and its prestigious Community Engagement classification.

LOCATION: This job is based on-campus at Oregon State University, in Corvallis,
Oregon.

40% TEACHING AND MENTORING EXPECTATIONS:  The typical teaching load
across three academic quarters is six courses, including introductory as well as upper division classes that contribute to the Digital Communication Arts major. Specifically, this faculty member will be responsible for creating and teaching courses in the theory and practice of visualization. The types of courses developed should provide demonstrable impact for people in the state of Oregon and beyond. The teaching of contemporary visualization technology and techniques will focus on
the explication/illustration/narrative of data related to social, economic,
environmental, or other research issues.

Teaching in the SAC requires educating and mentoring a diverse group of learners,
which includes creating high-impact opportunities such as:

Sponsoring student research or internships
Developing study abroad opportunities, service learning courses, and/or using
innovative pedagogies such as hybrid or online learning.
Developing collaborative teaching opportunities with other disciplines.

Teaching in the SAC also requires mentoring undergraduate students as
appropriate in their scholastic academic, research and professional development to support student success. Priority will be given to working with undergraduate
Digital Communication Arts majors and connecting with majors in other SAC
programs.

40% RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP EXPECTATIONS: The faculty member is expected
to maintain interdisciplinary scholarly and/or creative activities in the area of expertise. This work may be generated both collaboratively and independently,
should be validated by peer-review, and must be communicated in appropriate
ways valuable to the school and discipline, such as:

Journal articles, book chapters, and/or books recognized as relevant to
visualization research
Professional/public presentations
Presentations at regional/national/ international conferences
Creative work/juried film festival showings/art exhibitions/installations

Scholarship and research of the successful candidate will strengthen connections to other academic units through support of interdisciplinary collaboration among SAC
programs (art, music, speech communication, new media communication,
theatre), across CLA, and with other colleges conducting applicable research at
OSU.

20% SERVICE EXPECTATIONS: Develop and implement an undergraduate
curriculum in Visualization in conjunction with faculty in New Media
Communications. School, college, and university service expectations include
serving on program, school or college committees as appropriate, and participation
in professional academic organizations outside the University, including
professional and community-based groups that advance OSUs goals of student
success and diversity.

Over time, it is reasonable to expect an evolution of specific duties within the categories described above. As such, other specific duties, as assigned and agreed,
will amend this position description.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

PhD or MFA (or other terminal degree) in visualization, information science, digital design, digital media, communication studies, media studies, cinema, computer science, interactive design, 2D and/or 3D animation, gamification, virtual reality, augmented reality, digital humanities, or other related field by September 16,
2016.
Demonstrated experience in the digital visualization of space, form, information,
and/or data.
Record of scholarly publications, presentations, creative exhibitions, or
demonstrated scholarly work commensurate with expectations for an assistant or
associate professor at Oregon State University.
Demonstrated commitment to engaging, educating, and mentoring a diverse group
of learners.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

External validation of research excellence among peers.
Dedication to the establishment of a community of scholar/teachers.
Prior supervision of undergraduate/graduate student research.
Experience in an academic appointment or working in a related professional field.
