The Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of
California, Santa Barbara, seeks a mediamaker/scholar whose production
practice is informed by and engages with film and media history,
theory, and criticism. This tenure-track Assistant Professor
appointment will begin on July 1, 2015.
We are a department with a combined research agenda that includes
multiple scholarly approaches to film and media and a flexible notion
of what constitutes a media object of study. We are open to a
candidate whose creative projects are carried out in any one or more
media forms and who would expand the department?s research and
curricular strengths, international scope, and interdisciplinary
interests.
The dossier of the successful candidate will show a strong commitment
to teaching as well as an outstanding record of creative and research
activity. S/he will be expected to teach in the core areas of our
undergraduate and graduate programs, supervise and curate student
projects, and develop innovative production courses integrated within
a liberal arts curriculum emphasizing film and media theory, history,
and criticism.
The department serves over 400 undergraduate majors and 30 doctoral
students. Our facilities include a sound stage, screening rooms,
animation and digital media labs, and the state-of-the-art Pollock
Theater housed within the Carsey-Wolf Center, which supports research,
teaching, and public programming about all forms of media.
A PhD and/or MFA is expected by the time of appointment. Applicants
with the MFA degree who are prepared to work in a research oriented
Film and Media Studies department are encouraged to apply. The
department is especially interested in individuals who can contribute
to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through
research, teaching, and service.
