[ecrea] PhD opportunities in Television and Gender

Northumbria University offer a number of PhD studentships, one of which is focused on Television and Gender and is co-supervised by James Leggott and Mary Irwin. The deadline for applications is 14th April, for an October start.

"The critical study of popular television and gender is a growing area of dynamic and diverse scholarship, and this PhD project will contribute to this emerging field through a focussed case study exploring the relationship between gender and British television. So far, scholarship in this area has included topics such as on-screen representation, television writers, gendered viewing relationships, historical television, gender and genre, and the significance of gender to extant and missing narratives surrounding the production and development of television. The supervisory team invite on any aspect of the broad topic of popular British television and gender, including (but not limited to) the following indicative topics:
• Contemporary representations of gender in popular British television
• Historical representations of gender in popular British television
• Gender and genre
• British Television comedy writers/performers and gender
• Gendered viewing relationships with television
• Women writing for British television
• Women and television production

Eligibility criteria:  Applicants should hold a first or upper second class honours degree (in a relevant subject) from a British higher education institution, or equivalent. Students who are not UK/EU residents are eligible to apply, provided they hold the relevant academic qualifications, together with an IELTS score of at least 6.5.
