The tuition of the doctorate students in the field of Cultural Studies - apart from the areas with which it is associated, such as Literature, Philosophy, History, Communications, Sociology, Geography and Anthropology - will develop the skills required to resolve concrete issues which engage populations and public authorities (issues such as social discrimination, xenophobia, extreme nationalism, social tensions and weak civic participation) and economic powers (the creation of museums, festivals, events, tourist attractions and the cultural industries in general), and the various social groups who wish to see themselves recognised in representation of the world, requiring the legitimisation of new socio-cultural practices.

This Programme also seeks to stimulate the capacity to produce autonomous research in multidisciplinary contexts - which can be international, national or local - and to develop reading and writing skills in scientific contexts, in addition to reinforcing and deepening the critical aspects of the taught content.

The Doctorate Programme in Cultural Studies welcomes students who wish to develop their research skills in both the English and Portuguese languages.
