PhD positions in Journalism, Media and Communication

Placement at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG), Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

1-2 PhD positions are offered the opportunity to begin with the autumn 2011 semester.

Education

The education consists of 240 higher education credits and results in a PhD degree. The PhD level is the highest formal level of education, and aims at providing a

qualified education to those who wish to work with research and development issues within as well as outside a university context. The education consists of a course portion

of 90 higher education credits and a dissertation portion of 150 higher education credits. Courses are offered in collaboration with the Department of Political Science at the

University of Gothenburg.

Entrance requirements

To be considered for acceptance, the applicant must meet the general entrance requirements for PhD-level studies as well as specific entrance requirements

according to the general Journalism, Media and Communication curriculum (see the department’s web pages at http://www.jmg.gu.se/utbildning/forskarutbildning/antagning/).

Financing

The advertised PhD positions are financed through employment as a PhD student.

* *

Objective

The PhD positions will reflect JMG’s research profile – those areas in which the department can offer qualified supervision on a PhD-level. JMG’s research is

characterized by its concentration on social science and its empirical approach. The research on journalism, media and communication at JMG is conducted partly from a

democracy perspective, in which questions concerning power, publicity and the formation of opinion play a central role, and partly from an audience perspective, with questions

concerning structure, use and impact in focus.

Completion

Completion concerning PhD application with eligible essay is due after admission date. Completion essay is to be sent to concerned institution at the end of

the current semester at which the placement of the education was given notice. Completion of application, beyond complementary eligibility essay, in order to fortify

qualifications received before admission date is two weeks after admission date.

Pace of studies: The education is conducted on a full-time basis.

Admission date: 1st of September 2011, or as agreed upon.
