Thu Jan 16 22:46:02 GMT 2025

Teaching with Love and Hope:
A conference on media studies pedagogy and the global struggle against racism and injustice
Galway, 29-30 May (with field trips on 31 May)

Presented in association with the Community Communication and Alternative Media section of IAMCR. With funding from the Office of the Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at University of Galway.

This conference focuses on how teaching and research related to community and alternative media can help tackle the global rise in racism and intolerance. We encourage you to submit your work – both academic papers and presentations on practical interventions - and to join us in Galway this May.

Amidst a global surge in racism and intolerance, how can teaching and research in community and alternative media contribute to countering these harmful trends? This conference seeks to bring together academics, practitioners, and activists to explore how critical engagement with media can foster more inclusive, equitable societies.

We invite submissions that address this urgent topic, including:

  * Academic papers investigating the role of media in promoting or
    countering racism and intolerance.
  * Case studies showcasing the impact of community and alternative
    media in amplifying marginalized voices.
  * Presentations on practical interventions and strategies for
educators, media practitioners, and community organizers.

This conference offers a unique opportunity to engage in critical dialogue, share innovative practices, and build networks of solidarity. Sessions will feature a mix of traditional academic panels, interactive workshops, and field trips to projects that exemplify media’s potential for positive social change.

Key Themes:

  * Media pedagogy for anti-racism and decolonization.
  * Scholar-activism and the practice of solidarity.
  * Community media’s role in fostering inclusion and dialogue.
  * Intersectional approaches to addressing intolerance in media.
